Is it safe to say that if you've acquired an album that contains stamps only up to 1914 that the Roman States would be genuine?

re: Roman States

No.

There are many reprints, counterfeits and unfinished stamps that are on the market.

Just because the album is old, doesn't guarantee that the stamps in it are all genuine. remember that the counterfeits were made back in the "old" days. The missives for detecting counterfeit stamps, Serrane Guide and Album Weeds, were written in the early 20th Century.

re: Roman States

In fact, the introduction to Earee's "Album Weeds" is dated 1882. I believe the last published version was around 1912.

I just briefly checked my pdf version of the book, and while I do not see a chapter for the Roman States, I would echo Michael's comment that many of the dangerous forgeries and facsimiles were made in the late 1800's, specifically to sell to collectors who would use these to fill a space that would otherwise never be filled -- and this is exactly the kind of collection in which they will be found.

re: Roman States

Thanks guys. So should I therefore assume they are reprints or forgeries?

The original collector has a phenomenal amount of genuine material that are high value. There were a few hand picked out that I know are in the 4 and 5 digit numbers. Others that remain are 3 digit and lower.

I would, until you can have them checked to make sure.

I think we had a few ID requests on Roman States in the past. Finding those might give you a head start. You can post pictures too. Sometimes it is easy to tell. Sometimes it's not.

Thanks Michael.

When I get a chance (much later), I'll definitely scan these and see if anyone (you're the expert) can give me some knowledge of them.

I already do own a few Roman States but I do believe they are forgeries. These ones I do not know and particularly because this collection was formed during the early days and contains numerous first sets of stamps for various countries (many of which I've never even heard of).

My venture into WW will be quite an education and I'm looking forward to it.

re: Roman States

I was probably 12 or 13 when Dad gave me an 1893 Mekeel stamp album with stamps still in it! I was excited, but quickly realized that far more stamps had been removed from the album than remained. As I began to look up catalog values, I knew that I had the leftovers. But it was still a cool album.

I still have the album and it contains two Roman States stamps. I always assumed they were reprints because they were left behind in the album. When I bought The Serrane Guide after it was republished several years ago, it helped me reaffirm my belief the stamps were reprints.

If that album still held even a fraction of the stamps that had been removed..........! Day Dreaming

Kelly, I am not an expert. When someone asks here for an opinion, I look at the image, compare it to one in my collection (if I have one), and review the attributes of the image to my collection and to what the literature describes.

Michael - you're very lucky to have that book that describes forgeries. It needs to go on my list of things I need to invest in since I'm heading into unchartered waters. When it comes to Nova Scotia and forgeries, I have them down pretty well. I still do have one that I purchased as a forgery and I'll be blasted if I can find anything in it that is "off." Everything points to at the very least a reprint.

Now with the WW, there are so many countries with forgeries that I'm going to have to ask a lot of questions.

Many of the reprints can be discovered through a close examination of the catalog. I find many are the wrong color, or are imperf when they should be perforated and visa versa.
