I finally was able to get a high resolution scan of the stamp in question which confirmed that it was indeed a USA Scott 491. Even though it had pencil markings on the back indicating the wrong type! I found Hamrick Software's VUESCAN application in conjunction with an inexpensive Canon LIDE 120 scanner (whose standard software is not that useful for stamps!) plus the referenced information site in the discussion to be of great value.
Finally filled a LONG time hold-out in the collection. It is my best find since an 8 cent Kansas overprint when checking out an old penny album when I was 16.
Thanks all for your responses!
I am curious what aspect of the Canon supplied software was not sufficient.
It would not scan at the maximum resolution of the scanner and always generated an interpolated scan rather than the raw pixel display whuch was required to see full details.
I am attempting to verify whether the stamp to the left is a Scott USA 491. To the right is a known Scott USA 492 for reference.
Assistance would be very much appreciated.
