The 100 Greatest American Stamps published 2007

I got it from Goodwill this morning for $10.90. What a find.

Published in 2007, it is today suddenly my favorite book on stamps; it is a coffee-table book with great pictures of the stamps plus what you need to know about these beauties we all own. On a table at the bottom of each page are values, mint and used, at 10 yr intervals of these stamps from 1920. 1980, and at publishing in 2007, reveal values that are the most interesting, recall the 80's were very good for stamps.

In my collection, my favorite two: The perfect, perfect blue 14 cent Indian Head (#565) at 38th, and the equally perfect colored green and black $5 Franklin (#524) at 35th in this list of 100.

Many I would not pick, the authors had there reasons. Politics might intrude, both General Lee and Jefferson stamps are listed.

I have one XF $5 Franklin and ten 14c Indians. My Indians are 8 XFs and 2 suberb.

I'll bet I'm not the first to review, but it maybe be useful to some.

There is a youtube video on a presentation of the 100 greatest stamps. I am not sure if it is the same 100.

I like a good cliff hanger now and then but seriously, what was number 1 if that was considered to be the top or in the alternative case what was number 100?

Or just tell us both, number 1 and number 100!

100 Greatest American Stamps is by Janet Klug and Donald Sundman.

Some similar titles include:

Every Stamp Tells a Story: The National Philatelic Collection
A History of Ameria in Thirty-Six Postage Stamps by Chris West
Blue Mauritius: The Hunt for the Worlds's Most Valuable Stamps by Helen Morgan
Put a Stamp On It!: Seventy-Seven Sparkling Stories Showcasing How Stamps Have
Intercepted Historical Events by Herman Herst
A History of Britain in Thirty-Six Postage Stamps by Chris West
Miniature Messages: The Semiotics and Politics of Latin American Postage Stamps

I have been reading an absolutely fascinating book, Le Grand's Manual for Stamp Collector by A. Le Grand, which was published in 1892 and provides a rather detailed look at the hobby as it existed in 1892 which is part of a class reprint series by Forgotten Books which has a web site http://www.forgottenbooks.com/ . It is a good introduction to stamp collecting in general and provides some interesting details on the state of the hobby at the time and its development from the initial issuance of stamps. Its 173 pages cover a wide range of topics. It was translated from French by Henri Pene Du Bois.
