Last week I paid a bit under $70 for a Legends of the West error sheet from a seller in California. It arrived today. Here is a paste of a message I just sent the seller:

'Sheet arrived today .Not real happy. .

You did not provide adequate protection fr this item. You mailed it in an oversize envelope with NO card board protection. There were two vinyl stockpages enclosed but that did not protect against rough handling. No 'Do not bend' written on the envelope, it was creased. By some miracle the sheet was only roughed up a bit and not severely damaged. Given the price I paid for it you should have taken better care when mailing it. I will need to put it under weight to flatten it. Once I get it in a mount it will probably look OK.

Next time I will look at feedback before jumping on what looks like a bargain.
I seldom complain to a seller, this was all a bit much. '

I had looked at feedback on him and noted a few dings for poor packaging. I guess I decided to roll the dice on this one. I think the sheet will be ok, it is bent a bit but not creased, no perforation separations. Lesson learned, always trust your instincts when evaluating a seller you don't know.

If the item was creased due to improper packaging, I would have initiated the return and refund process at ebay. It doesn't matter if the seller doesn't accept returns, ebay policy provides that a buyer is entitled to get the exact product that they bought.

If you want to know where to get another sheet like that for a few dollars more than what you paid, PM me.

re: Very Careless Seller on Ebay

The sheet was still in the original USPS packaging, over twenty year old and I think it was shrinking. Very difficult to remove the sheet from the envelope, the tabs were all stuck down. The sheet has a small ding at the top, I think that was from the original packaging. This could not have been seen by the seller so as little as I think of his mailing skills I won't blame him for that.

I mean, how do you spell 'clueless'? Selling a moderately expensive item then providing little or no stiffening to protect it in mail?

Aside from the issues mentioned, you did well with the price.Michael's kind offer should be carefully looked at by our members. It is doubtful that if you need that issue you could beat that price. When last I looked at prices for that issue, it was north of $100.

I'm keeping the sheet. I did get a good buy on it, although down the road I won't get as much for it if and when I sell my collection. Its all relative. Also the seller's feedback has a lot of references to him not being very nice to buyers who complain. I put it in a black stock sheet and put that in the appropriate place in my Mystic album and it looks just fine, it will probably smooth out in time.

You'd think a seller who gets dinged repeatedly for poor packaging would just maybe heed what folks are saying and begin taking more care when mailing. Some people never learn. Look at me, for example. I bought from this guy.

Excuse me while I go scream..

Such feedback tells me that this is a seller who doesn't care, because people keep buying from him regardless of the feedback. He has no reason to change.

re: Very Careless Seller on Ebay

He replied with something like- 'Sorry I felt I packaged this very well. You are welcome to return it for refund.' My reply:

'You used two soft vinyl stock sheets - not rigid- to cover the sheet you sent. When it came out of my mailbox the envelope had been creased right down the middle. The USPS usually will do this as part of their processing. You've been dinged on feedback several times over poor packaging. I'd think you'd learn. You apparently still don't get it. Incredible.

There was minor damage to the sheet but it could have been far worse. I got a good price on this and see no need to return it. Please.. when you mail a larger than usual item like this, use cardboard stiffener and write 'do not bend' on the envelope.'

He won't change, and will keep doing this over and over because he sees no need to change. One of these days he's going to get hit for a real loss due to his lazy packaging practices. I mean come on, mailing a $60+ item unprotected other than by its original packaging in a flimsy envelope with no real protection?

This is the third such event I have had in the past six weeks. I posted previously about the souvenir sheet mailed with no cardboard that arrived all messed up. I bought a cover from a seller in the UK that arrived in a thin envelope with no protection, not even a printed invoice folded around it, just a fragile cover in a fragile envelope. It's like some stupid epidemic. Or rather, an epidemic of stupidity.

Yet, people keep buying from these sellers even though there's a warning posted in the feedback about them...That sort of defeats the purpose of feedback, and renders it useless doesn't it? Or is it the thought that "My purchase will be handled differently than all those others who weren't happy with how theirs were packaged"? The end results were predictable and shouldn't have been a surprise.

re: Very Careless Seller on Ebay

Unfortunately, eBay feedbacks are virtually useless (although in this particular case they might have indicated an issue). There are hundreds of thousands of cases where the eBay feedback system has been manipulated; a good seller can have negative feedbacks and a bad seller can have 100% positive feedbacks.

For example, a vindictive buyer can easily use multiple accounts to buy from a good seller with the sole intention of writing a negative feedback. It is easy to trash a perfectly good seller’s rating doing this.

And then there is the issue with being able to go buy existing eBay accounts with the ‘Top Rated’ and 100% feedback history. It is possible for a person with zero actual eBay transactions to buy an existing account and use it; fooling buyers into thinking they have a real history. The majority of online auction scammers have 40-50 or more accounts. eBay and other online sites simply cannot properly vet accounts. It would cost too much money to actually verify that people are ‘real’ or to chase down those with multiple accounts. There are books and website which promote convicted felons to start online businesses using these kinds of tactics when they get released from prison.

Many stamp collectors work becoming educated on the stamps they are buying; but we should also be spending as much time becoming educated on the sellers we use. One of the obstacles we have to overcome is the sharing of seller information. Far too often we do not share the good sellers we have found because we selfishly do not want to generate competition for ourselves. On the other side of the coin, we sometimes do not share bad experiences because they make us look bad or foolish.

It is odd that many of us would think twice about buying from some unknown person selling stamps out of the trunk of his car but have no problems buying from people we do not know online. The fact that this community allow folks to get to know each other before starting to do business in probably one of the reasons it has been successful.
