The 5/- cattle In dusty was a replacement for the 5/- Coat-of-Arms definitive which had been in commercial use since 1949 (12 years). The issue was intended to honour the Northern territory cattle industry, and the design features an aboriginal stockman at work.

The stamp was recess printed and the first was issued on July 26, 1961.There were two versions issued, both on cream paper, different shades; purple-brown and reddish-brown, the latter being printed on paper with a less prominent colour, the so-called "intermediate" between cream and white paper.

In May 1964 the 3rd printing of the stamp was on white paper and distributed to the public on June 17, 1964. The paper is the same type used for the 10/- Matthew Flinders and £1 George Bass, part of the original Navigator series.

Interesting how this stamp very much resembles the issues that were

coming out in the '50s in the US.

Hi Randy

I didn't know that, I checked the internet to see what that stamp looks like, and the only one I could find was this 1964 issue, it may not be the one you are referring to, you have my curiosity aroused.

From the collection of Winedrinker.

I just felt I had to play the "Western Cattle in Storm" card.

Rob, I think Randy was referring not to a specific US stamp issue, but to the general design scheme: a scene, depicted in monochrome, with similar text layout, and no extraneous ornamentation.

Hi youpiao

Thanks for that info and images, it seems I took Randy's comment literally.

Ted got it exactly right, Rob -

it was not a reference to any one particular stamp, but rather that it resembled the many issues that were being produced at that time in the US.

Hi Randy

It seems on this site we all learn something new from one another. in this case not to take something so literal, I should have realised that, silly me.

Rob.
