pretty cool ! great combo ... old books and stamps.. both of which I collect.. may have to put this in an ideas file for later.
Hey Ikey, I also have a modest collection. I found that turn of the century home/school reference libraries are an excellent source. I have 4 or 5 sets that range from 1895 to 1913. The better the set, the better the illustrations.
The paper in this book is surprisingly heavy, almost like construction paper, so I don't think tear out will be an issue. If it should prove to be, I guess I could house them in sheet protectors.
I did consider having the book repaired/rebound, but the resale value is only about $15-$20 and I didn't know for sure, but figured repair would likely cost at least that, if not more.
In the end, the project is aimed mostly at mounting duplicates, more or less just for fun and maybe another tool to keep the grandkids involved.
Thanks for the input,
WB
Very cool!
Back when I was doing first day cover design, I bought old American History school books for their illustrations.
Both of these were lifted from early 20th century books. Waaay before Internet clip art!
Jeredutt3 & Tom, Thanks much!
Nice covers, Tom! Unlike a lot of those collector generated covers you see on Ebay, the cachet actually matches the stamps.

I picked this old book up about 10 years ago at an estate sale. I bought it primarily because I'm a sucker for pen and ink illustrations.
It's titled, "Our Presidents At A Glance", has a copyright of 1933 and covers all the presidents from Washington to FDR. It has a presentation sheet inside the front cover from a teacher to her student that's date 1936.
The pages are in great shape, but the binding and cover were toast. My first idea was to make a slip cover for it, but I didn't care for how it turned out, so I set it aside for a couple of days to think about it.
Eventually, I decided to remove, trim and punch the pages to put into a 3-ring binder. I used a page from an old Harris album to slip into the front cover.
After that, I made templates to create a border for the main illustration page and another for framing the stamps. I can cut out appropriately sized holes for whatever stamps I decide to mount.
...and this is where I started. Even though you could fill an entire page with Washington stamps, I'll try to keep it fairly clean and organized with just a few stamps that don't overpower the illustration. That won't be an issue with most Presidents.
The text pages cover everything from birth to death(where app.)and contains a lot of info you don't always see in a biography. In the back there are also pages that cover the history of all the first ladies, a history of the electoral process and the vote statistics for all the elections. As well as a summary page of the Presidents political careers. I think it was a very well thought out and nicely executed publication.
Hope you like it, comments and suggestions always welcome.
