I only use Hawid mounts and trim them as needed. That way I only need to buy 2 or 3 different sizes.
I prefer Davo mounts. Like Hawid, they are open-top, with only the bottom sealed. So I trim each mount for both length and height. As a result, I have six sets of mounts available, one of each size that is the of the greatest height with the maximum number of strips per package (as the height increases, the number of strips per package is periodically decreased, with the package cost remaining the same regardless the number of strips). I like the simplicity of only having to stock these six sizes of mounts for all my needs from very small stamps to full-page souvenir sheets and mini-sheets.
The Davo mounts are now also available in a self-adhesive version. No wetting is necessary to activate the gum. This is nice since it eliminates the welts on the album page that the moisture applied to the stamp mount may cause.
How do the open-on-three-sides mounts work with respect to stamps slipping out?
A number of our members have recommended the bottom only sealed mounts. Besides the potential negative of slippage, are there other downsides?
The positives I see are the ease of finding and trimming the right size mount and the ease of placing the stamp in the mount. No double backward reverse flip needed... That first positive also means fewer mounts needed in inventory as Chris and Richard indicate.

I have never had an issue with stamps popping out. My albums are always stored upright on a bookshelf, so the sealed side of the mount is always toward the bottom of the page. I guess if one started throwing the albums around one might have a problem with slippage, but otherwise I don't anticipate a problem.
The only problem that I have encountered is with "very heavy items" when compared to normal stamp issues. This would include the "3-D" stamps that Bhutan was fond of issuing back several decades ago. I did have one set that I mounted in my Davo mounts and they did keep falling out when the album pages were flipped. I am going to have to remount with Showgard or similar split-back top-and-bottom sealed mounts to keep them from falling out of their mounts. I haven't been mounting many mint self-adhesive stamps with backing paper still attached so don't know if they will have a similar problem, but their thickness and weight are also much less than the Bhutan 3-D stamps.
One more reason to trust the open-on-three-sides mounts is that some of the best albums that one can purchase in regards to beautiful pages but also high expense (Lighthouse and Palo albums where mounts are already precut and attached for each stamp to be mounted) use the this style of stamp mount. I am not aware of an album manufacturer that uses the top-and-bottom-sealed and split-back mounts.
I too have never had any issues with stamps falling out. I also now use a glue stick with them instead of wetting or licking them. I buy the largest size for the price.
I do not like the open top mounts. I have had stamps fall out of them.
"I do not like the open top mounts. I have had stamps fall out of them."
I also use top loading mounts. I do not like fumbling around trying to remove stamps from split back mounts for inspection. For people who do use them do not adhere the bottom part of the mount or it becomes easy to damage the stamps while removing or putting them back in the mounts. When it comes to selling your collection buyers are going to want to inspect the reverse of better stamps and do not want the hassel of removing them especially if both top and bottom are glued down. As I usually buy sections of collections I am always upgrading and have need to remove the stamps I already have to check the reverse to see which stamp is better. Top loaders are without doubt the way to go for this.
I primarily buy 2 sizes of split back mounts, 63mm high and 120mm high. I cut them length wise down the split with a shear and it yields two strips that can be further cut down to fit most stamps. This is by far the most economical way I have found to afford using large amounts of mounts. From time to time I notice some slippage of the stamps in the mount but that is easily rectified. I have only ever had one fall out and it was a proof on card paper.
I buy the Hawid top opening mounts in strips 210 mm length and trim to size for my GB definitives. I purchase them in lots of 100 at about US$20 from http://www.greatbritainstamps.net/
even with postage it is still cheaper than Subway stamps.
I do find that the stamps tend to move a bit unless the albums are stored upright and pages carefully turned. I also put the pages in protectors so any that do move are not lost.

After planning some custom US album pages and preparing spaces for them, I got tired to trying to find what mount to use especially for the mini-sheets. Dealers sort the sizes by length or general so I created my own sorted list so now I can scan down to find the best size. I am less familiar with Showgard these days but Scott/Prinz sells more different sizes plus I prefer them better (more flexible, true black background).
These were taken from several sellers but Global Stamps claims some as exclusive sizes to them.
