The sorting machines can.
I just received a cover from Germany today with all 3 stamps heavily damaged.
I'm with Michael -
the sorting machines can do a LOT of crazy damage.

I must be lucky as our philatelic counter post offices have a "Hand Sort" Tub .I get nearly all mail mail cancelled and put in that tub to avoid the sorting machine .
Will admit I don't know what happens to my international mail once it leaves our shores though!!!!!
Brian
The envelope is perfectly dry, no damage/scratchs around the stamp- yet it appears to have delaminated.
Can a cancel machine rip a stamp in half width-wise?
