re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

From the Safe website it appears that DS refers to their Dual page System.

Quote:

"SAFE-dual, patented, printed hingeless albums are the finest the world has to offer. You will receive TWO totally separate pages with the Dual System: one (1) custom printed country stamp background page on heavy, crisp cream, pH neutral cardstock AND one (1) fully transparent, rigid, crystal clear archival polyester sheet to place your mint stamps and see both sides of the stamp. Build your own distinctive collection - without mounts! DUAL denotes TWO."

They produce hingeless GB albums to Michel or SG. Could not see a blank page on the site.

Possible answers are,
DS Dummy Stamp.

DN DeNomination, eg, a Rated stamp such as "H" rate USA.

FS FacSimile or FiScal.

Guess you could always email "SAFE" to get a definite answer.

re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

Hi Rich, ok I'm confused, not difficult these days.
Think it may be a different catalogue system other than Scott, Gibbons, Michel, Deegam.
I tried to email them from their website but was unable to due to not completing a Captcha which never even appeared!
I then went to their Facebook page and messaged them and also sent a direct email to the sales office.
Hopefully they will reply within a day or two.
I did for a moment think that maybe the initials designated Sheets, Coils, Booklets but was unable to make that work for the pages you showed.
Have been unable to find anything online that gives an answer.

re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

Have just found this website that appears to show that the albums were issue in two numbering formats. These were Michel and Stoneham. Maybe another of our members has a Stoneham catalogue and could confirm whether your pages are so numbered.

Hi I have contacted Safe only to be told they have no idea, but forward my request to the UK, find it hard to believe that other collectors have not run in to this problem before.

re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

Just received a message back from Melvyn Philpott editor of Stoneham.

Quote:

"I am very sorry but I do not recognise these numbers at all- they are NOT numbers used in Stoneham"

His only suggestion is to contact "Safe".
Oh well back to the drawing board. Although it is curious as to why some have the SG numbers against them as well.
Could it be that the pages were originally blank and the owner used his / her own numbering system?

re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

HI there y'all,
I have been following this interesting thread, and would agree the Numbers as per on the Safe pages have defiantly not been manufactured at Safe but been type written on by the collector for example there is DS then Ds I can only suggest that the numbers are possibly a dealers stock number or a private collectors own numbers in any case I'd be thinking of removing the stock and re-mounting them with a popular system say either SG or David Mayalls' system all in all a very app-hazard way of writing them up ...poor machins lol

re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

It is a mystery indeed I am very experienced with the printing process and I can say without hesitation these letters are part of the original printed sheet. On the first scan DC is included within the stamp frame together with identification numbers.
This collection with many hundreds of loose stamps in plastic envelopes uses the same lettering system identifying the contents.

re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

Rich, looking at the latest scan I think the answer is that the pages are in Stoneham catalogue order but that the numbers have been added later.
This last page does not have any of the reference numbers on, merely a description.

So Could these pages have been printed for a collector using the Stoneham reference
at extra cost?

re: Machins as detailed on the Safe album pages

Obviously can not be sure but very much doubt that the manufacturers would custom print one set of leaves.
Maybe pick up a second hand Stoneham catalogue for 2007 and see what tallies. Maybe even the new one out next year.
I am surprised that none of our members UK has access to one, even if only a library copy, though possibly they are all celebrating some holiday or other.
