As an adjunct to my Germany collection I am keeping a very limited number of World-War (I and II) era stamps from surrounding European countries such as Hungary and Romania. This interest started when I looked up a town name on a postmark and found that after the town's Jews were driven out the local economy collapsed and the town subsequently virtually disappeared.

I just found a nice 5-Jul-1917 postmark from "Penzrovatglas" but Google could not find it (!!!)

Does anyone know of this town, or do you know where to find a list of old towns that may have changed their names or no longer exist?

Many thanks, Dave.

The word is "pentrovatolas" and it means roughly "receipt"( or possibly cancellation). The ones I have seen on the net are hexagonal with this word on the bottom and the actual place name on the top.

If you google the correct spelling you will get some results ( you will need to use the translate function ) - mainly finished auctions with some illustrations.

If you like these obsolete areas, look up Bergenland or West Hungary. It was a very short-lived country.

"...If you google the correct spelling..."

1) It actually is penZ not penT so I had that going for me.

2) But you are correct on the Olas not Glas. It looked like the G in the town name but on closer inspection was smudged.

3) Hexagonal cancel as you noted.

Did find it on Google after all, so many thanks. But no idea why the search engine couldn't locate it after eight consecutive correct letters to start. I guess we don't have to worry quite yet about Robots and Algorithms taking over the World...

Still not a big fan of Hungary overall but some of the oldies (moreso WWI era) do have very nice/clear SON cancels. Worth at least a couple album pages just for the historical aspect.

"...look up Bergenland or West Hungary..."

Done, thanks, but once again Google couldn't find BErg but did get the BUrg spelling (East Austria they described which is, in my mind, same as West Hungary!) The name "Sopron" jumped out which I think I've seen in overprints. So, again, useful info.

Many thanks to both, Dave.

re: Hungary Obsolete Town Listings ?

Dave

One of the problems is that letters in different alphabets are slightly different and when you google you are trying to match a Hungarian T ( say ) with an English T, where in fact it isn't necessarily.

To some extent getting the right hit first time is a bit of an accident - which is where this board comes into its own - someone has always seen it all before.

I don't understand the technological reasons but the google hits you get seem to differ according to whether you use internet explorer or Mozilla Firefox. If I get into trouble I alternate them. Also whether you are set up for American English as opposed to UK English might affect how your request is handled.

Note my comment about using the correct spelling was a bit clumsy - it came across ( on re-reading) as being sarcastic and critical - that was not the intention, merely a factual statement. Note to self engage brain before putting keyboard in gear.

Hey Malcolm. I didn't recognize it as sarcastic since that's an art form with which I am unfamiliar.

Rolling On The Floor Laughing

But I do sometimes live for correcting correctors who "take a tone" (didn't really feel that way about yours...) In one of my early posts I used the word provenance which spell-check changed to providence. I was the recipient of a remark to the effect that if I planned to use big words to sound smart I might want to use the correct word. I think I was pretty calm on line but remember venting furiously off-line (mostly at the spell-check).

Anyway, I did/do appreciate the feedback. I use Safari and Google so will try alternating if the same issue arises in future. Question: I've heard of Firefox (positively) but am loathe to add another browser without dropping one of the other two. Any feedback on why I might consider doing so?

Cheers, Dave.

Dave, I use Firefox with Google as my search engine and no bad problems, occasional crashes but there are plenty of add-ons available.

re: Hungary Obsolete Town Listings ?

Thanks Vic. I'll download today and try it for a bit. But I must admit I never see any gobsmacking improvements when I try various programs (outside browsers). Usually you gain a little something here and lose a little something there...

I'll report back and give an update sometime in case it's useful to other members.

Dave.
