I have just been looking on eBay for stamp mounts and the postage cost from the US are astronomical ,ranging between US $24-00 to $51-00 to send a $5-00 pack of mounts to Australia.
Hope they don't think they will get any buyers from this neck of the woods!!!Thumbs Down

re: Postage costs to Australia ???

I would be interested to see what the same items would cost to ship from Australia to the US. If the mounts are in their original packaging then it would fall in the "rigid" category. If they were loose in a bendable envelope, then the costs would be less than half - $6.97 for a 6 oz. large envelope full. Of course, ebay charges will be a bit more, haha.

re: Postage costs to Australia ???

Brian, looks like the postage quotes are a range with flat rate priority mail international. As Tad pointed out, first class international large envelope is much cheaper. Even first class international parcel is cheaper, but runs double or a little bit more than the large envelope.

The November 7, 2016 issue of Linn's has an interesting article about the US Postal Service, international mail rates and the large handling fees that the US has to pay to the receiving country while countries like China pay very little to the US to have its mailed delivered in the US. These fees are through agreements/treaties/directives made through the Universal Postal Union.

The UPU considers China, for example, as a developing nation. Therefore the international postage rates from China to other countries are kept low with the receiving country expected to pay for most the delivery costs within its country. The UPU is changing (or is expected to change) China's designation, which is supposed to take full effect in 2018. The Chinese postal service will have to pay more to the receiving countries to have its mailed delivered.

I don't know how much Australia charges the US Postal Service to deliver inbound mail from the US, but that will have something to do with the high rates for priority mailings.

I would inject a note that begins "Developed nation? I've met a few Australians, and" but I fear that only the Aussies would get a chuckle out of it.

Good lot, them.

And good on the UPU to adjust fees to (broadly speaking) national income, but does this really make sense?

After all, why should the Republic of Outer Boondocks get paid more to deliver the mail when their letter carriers get paid so much less?

And why should the G7 postal services get paid less for incoming mail, when their letter carriers get paid so much more?

Given the labor cost differentials, equal postage rates would be a huge subsidy for the poorer nations.

I understand that it makes a little more sense when you look at it from the point of view of the individual senders, but is it the poorest citizens of Outer Boondockia who send international mail?

Cheers,

re: Postage costs to Australia ???

A lot of it has to do with exchange rates. Back when the US dollar was valued low against the Aussie dollar, everything here was cheap to Australians. Friends of mine came visiting because USA was such a value. Some of them were buying high dollar model kits on eBay and having them shipped to me for forwarding. I'd wait until they had several, bundle them up and send in one box. That saved them on shipping as well.

US International rates nearly doubled a few years ago. I used to be able to send a model kit to Australia or Europe for $10 US. Now it's well over $20. They say that they made it reflect their actual costs. I think they decided to try to make up their deficit on International packages!

I am hoping that UPU and USPS closes that China loophole. We have Chinese companies dumping faulty goods on eBay, at a lower cost than a comparable US vendor would pay for postage alone.

I recently had the case on my key fob for my Buick crack and break. (This one is separate from the key). I went to eBay and found I could buy one from Chinese vendors for $1.99 with Free Shipping. I decided to shop American and found the cheapest USA vendor selling same item for $3.99 with free shipping. So I placed my order with them and immediately saw I was swindled. The ad said the vendor was in California. My Paypal payment came back stating China. Then I got a receipt saying my item would be shipping from China. They are getting negative feedback with a warning for future buyers!

Here's some info from AP's web site.
