Looking into the various watermark detector gadgets being discussed recently, I have found it frustrating (as other members have also expressed). Certain items are not available in every country and/or prices in local currencies may be prohibitive.

I recently went to our last remaining stamp shop - which now is no longer active in buying/selling, just a few things left on the shelves and some supplies. It is right downtown with no parking and inconvenient hours for me. Also seemed a bit expensive and what they lacked in product would have to be "ordered online" for me (presumably, and acceptably, with their profit margin built in).

Today I was surfing around and found "Unitrade Associates" in Toronto. Their prices for a few items I just bought at the stamp store were reasonable (Dennison hinges $4 vs $5, stamp tongs $4 vs $6). They also have some other gadgets/supplies that look useful for stamp removal, watermark detection, etc.

Questions for fellow Canucks:

Is it worthwhile to approach Unitrade and offer them to be the "preferred vendor" for SoR members who would, in turn, get a 10% discount (or whatever could be negotiated). I imagine one of two scenarios in advance to make this attractive to them:

1. Someone collects all the orders and submits them at the same time (easier for them).

2. Someone verifies a buyer is an SoR member before giving the discount (ensures they are actually getting member-focused business).

Without getting too far into the weeds, putting on their business hat:

1. I can see them asking for email addresses to send notices/specials. Personally, I wouldn't mind it, but not everyone may feel the same.

2. Distribution might be an issue - e.g. would they accept a bulk order with multiple delivery addresses or (to contain costs and justify the discount) do one main delivery then the "responsible SoR member" would do individual deliveries.

Cheers, Dave.

P.S. Hopefully this query does not break any SoR rules - just trying to find out if we can gain an advantage and save money to buy stamps from each other.

A Service Dog gives a person with a disability independence. Never approach, distract or pet a working dog, especially when (s)he is in harness. Never be afraid to ask questions to the handler (parent).

Thanks Kelly. Looks amazingly like the Unitrade catalog - same products, prices, etc. I'll have to look closer before I press this further. Not looking for a new career!

Dave.

Dave:

You could purchase from a dealer that sells all the Unitrade, CWS and Lighthouse products in a bricks and mortar stamp shop that ships across Canada via Canada Post.

I can vouch for David - he's a great guy. We spent an afternoon together when I was in Ottawa last year and he's helped me out via mail.

Sorry I forgot to mention you first David! My week has been crazy - but you're definitely at the top of the list if I can't get what I need from the stamp store in St.Jacobs (they moved there from Kitchener earlier this year).
