It might just be me, but it looks like an offset print. Looking at the P & O of postage would make it a type 4 (scott 530). Can you verify whether it is engraved or offset?
I agree. Doesn't look like a 501. Can't see the printing artifacts you say are there. For double impression examples of 501d, look here: http://www.usphila.com/us/stamp/price/scott-501-page-2
First, you'll notice your stamp looks nothing like these examples. Note the visible cross-hatching in the background of the center oval in the examples. Now, look at yours and cross-hatching is not visible. Second, you'll note the double impressions are pretty striking.
