I received the September El Quetzal in todays mail...at the time of printing Guatemala is a country without a mail system. The main post office in Guatemala city is not accepting new mail....only the parcel post office was open as many Guatemalans receive parcels from abroad. The Philatelic Department where our members obtained new issues has been closed. The government is looking for a new Private Contractor...but our Vice President who wrote the article says it will be months if not years. I wonder if there are any local posts or private contractors ? That would make for interesting philatelic items.

Thanks for posting this update Phil. I was fascinated to learn what was going on down there when you shared this some weeks ago. Hard to believe this is happening in the western hemisphere in the 21st century. We need to pay attention! "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."

Ernie, when i think about it...the stamps of Guatemala that i care about are the era 1875 to 1920...the American Bank Note Company,Waterlow and Sons,Perkins Bacon and Co.The newer stuff is just postage !

Not quite sure how business is being conducted...but as far as Guatemalans writing letters to one another i do not think the traffic would be too heavy...there are areas where the natives do not speak Spanish..just native dialects, i have hundreds of Guatemala covers but they are almost all airmails going to manufacturing companies out of the country...very few internal letters.
