I have been busy! Here's my shelf of binders containing my USA collection so far. I'm pretty pleased that I'm organizing things and can sit down and view an album. I've just done commemoratives so far, I figure there may be a binder for each definitive series. We'll see how it goes...

Image Not Found
Pages are quite simple. I use the 2 pocket archive quality pages. I have cut two 7x5.5" cards to stiffen the pockets and provide a back drop for the stamps and covers. Whatever I have, or choose to include in the collection is just fine. I do some one pocket pages for larger pieces. Here's C78, the 11 cent airmail issue of 1971. I had a mint single, a plate block and a booklet page so I included them all, along with a Fleetwood first day cover.

Image Not Found
The baby zeppelin, one of my favorite stamps. A flown cover a few days after it's issuance.

Image Not Found
My favorite patriot! Here I had a corner single, so that's more interesting in a plain single. I even have all four corners on some issues. I don't have a plate block but that's okay. If I come across one, I'd add it but not worried about not having one. I also try to find interesting first day covers other than the typical Artcraft. This one is Cachet Craft, and I like House of Farnum too. I especially like one offs that were printed by an organization related to the stamp or first day city.

Image Not Found
Here's the 1933 Byrd issue, I can arrange my pockets anyway I want. Some of the early stuff was left in their glassines, as this was the first book I did. I'll probably take them out and put them right in the pockets.

It's not the fanciest album set up but it's been getting things in order. I can add in anything I choose, especially since I've thought to collect just about anything I find that I like! Onward to 1966!

Just love it. With modern word-processing, it does make it easier to "design your own" album and collection. It certainly lives you a lot more flexibility than just purchasing the commercial books. Thanks for sharing your collection, it has given me some ideas.

Super impressed Tom. Love that page for C78. Very well represented. Let me know what you think of the RCBCo. idea for your Oct. visit.

Hey Tommy!

Although I'm ridding myself of those pesky U.S. stamps, I am very impressed with what you've put together. Looking forward to more pages actually! How about some of those late-1800's I'm struggling with?

Davy.

re: USA Collection Progressing!

Hey Davy! I haven't gotten to that period just yet. The book marked 1893-1929 was put together before I figured out the concept of the cards. I wanted to get through the different scenarios with different stamp issues prior to tackling the toughest period.

Here's a few more pages that I had scanned... (I may have posted these previously)

Image Not Found
As mentioned earlier, this "freeform" album allows me to collect whatever I choose to represent each issue. For the NRA stamp, I had this nifty plate block of 20 so of course that was a keeper. I also had this cool commercial use Registered Mail cover with a block of 8. I especially like this page.

Image Not Found
Here's a typical page from the 1940s album. Minnesota Territory issue with a plate block and single. Also included is an Anderson cachet with a corner pair. Try to find another one like this. I always am looking for odd or unique items to add.

Image Not Found
National Defense issue of 1940 as we were preparing for the inevitable war. Again a plate block and I really like this single. It was no doubt on the sheet on top of a pad of 100 sheets, and a postal clerk marked the selvage. It's a keeper for sure! The cover I chose to include isn't of that stamp issue, but represents the national feeling at the time so it's relevant. There are no rules here, whatever makes me happy.

Image Not Found
And here's the Apollo 11 issue. I was super impressed with this stamp when it came out, as were most 11 year old boys! I had the plate block and a Use Zip Code single, so why not. Add in a boring Artcraft first day cover.

Note that some of these pages are not completely inclusive. In fact issues like the NRA one can go on to additional pages. I know the other side of that page has two more interesting covers I had. With this freeform concept, I can add in pages at will.

Image Not Found
And here's an example. The George Washington Bicentennial set looks nice together so I decided to keep a set together. The stock card fits in nicely, no bigger and thicker than a cover. I also have a couple of blocks of 4 that I found recently in a lot I bought on eBay. It's a pity, when I was a teen I had a full set of plate blocks!

Image Not Found
And here's page two of this series. I own a first day cover with an interesting corner card, and the second cover is the full set on a Washington's Birthday cover. This one David sent me!

I believe George Washington Bicentennial will become it's own album. I have at least 100 different event covers from that year. It was one of my big collections as a teen.

I found myself a way to organize and display all the neat stuff I've collected over the last half century, without having multiple albums... as in one for singles, one for plate blocks and one for first day covers... then what would I do with additional stuff like commercial usage covers, postcards, mementos? My Columbian pages already include Cinderella seals issued at the fair and an actual admission ticket. That's fun stuff most folks have never seen.

I probably have upset some collecting purists, oh well! I'm having fun and that's all that matters.

This is a very nice way of organizing a collection. Thinking outside the box obviously pays off.

Those are 5x7 Ultra Pro photo pages, correct?

Yes, these are the pages I have used. You can get some very good deals on eBay, especially if you buy in quantity. I bought 500 (5 boxes) and have just cracked open the last box. Between my US collection and three binders of New Jersey covers, I've used over 400 pages so far.

I'm ready to place a new order! There are several dealers beating each other up on eBay. I believe I paid something like $65 for 500 postpaid.

re: USA Collection Progressing!

Thought I'd add an appropriate entry to this thread. Between my New Jersey covers and my USA collection, I just cracked open my last box of 100 2 pocket pages. Almost in a panic, I went back to the 'bay checking to see if I could get some more. I found a dealer who would honor his $70 with free postage price for 500 2 pocket pages (lowest price currently on eBay), but is sending me 400 2 pocket and 100 1 pocket pages! I need the 1 pocket pages for larger covers and stamp multiples. The actual opening on these is 8x10, which is made for photographs. That size page is the same overall size as the 2 pocket pages. Standard ones from the Staples are too big.

So what happens next? As I'm about to place this order for $70... I get an email from eBay telling me I have a new $9.00 eBay Bucks available to me! So total cost is $61. That's a good day!
