A scarce near complete set of high value stamps of the Coronation of King George VI. The only stamp missing is the £1 Specimen, have not as yet found one that has interested me.

The £1 stamp on the right isn't stained, it is the colour of the paper.

How can you tell the difference on a Brown Lake stamp and a Brown-Lake stamp?

From my monitor it looks like Brown Lake is more brown, and Brown-Lake is more lake. And no, this is not a comedy routine.

Thanks for posting Robert. It is interesting how different catalogues interpret color:

Scott:
5sh -- dull red brown
10sh -- dull grey violet

Stanley Gibbons:
5sh -- claret
10sh -- dull purple

And neither catalogue lists any other color varieties that I could see -- unlike your inestimable ACSC!

Cheers,
Eric

By the hyphen. The former is two different colours and the latter they are mixed. Only joking.

Thanks for pointing that out to me. In the ACSC book the two colours are separated by a hyphen, I didn't think it was necessary so I didn't add them, must have forgotten that one.

I replaced that page.

Anyway, I added a link under my presentation so everyone can see the stamps in much larger detail, and the stamps that are "unlisted" have a false ACSC number so they can remain in proper order.

ACSC 212B is thick paper and ACSC 213B is thin paper, even though they are both Brown Lake, the thin paper will adsorb more ink thus making the stamp darker in colour; it is also white paper which will add to the colour contrast.

Having all the books would greatly confuse the collector that's for sure; with the Scott catalogue I am pressed to see any violet in the 10/- stamps. I being partially colour blind doesn't help any.

Here is a link to the actual stamps online in large detail, I also added it to the original post.

I do have the stamp in question but not being an specialist just one copy is good enough for me.
That was the only difference to me also, the hyphen, but I'll admit that it was T-I-C when I posted the question.Happy
