Here is the other side !
I think it's a keeper! The fact that it's got a receiving cancel makes it legitimate and worthy of being in your collection.
Thanks, like a lot of the people here do i googled the addressee A.E. Bishop missionary. Of course with such a name he was a prominent Protestant missionary in Honduras.
Oops ! i meant to say i googled the sender not the addressee !
I do not recall the exact make/model of that machine cancel on the back it is one of the least common ones.
Phil, not sure the problem here. is that the stamps aren't tied?
David, no..i was hoping there would be postmarks on the stamps themselves.
Well, you can just uncap that Magic Marker and do what the postman does.
i have too much respect for stamps and covers to do anything like that.
That was a joke, Phil.
I discovered there are two sides to this free lunch debate.
As you may know, as part of my "philatelic philanthropy" I have been giving away piles of on-paper as "freebies", just adding actual postage costs. Oddly, there were some (very few) complaints beforehand about the postage cost, but everyone seems happy with the end-result so I carried on.
Then, to make it more accessible to members with small budgets (i.e. those unwilling or unable to part with more than $2) I recently offered to do smaller lots and subsidize the postage cost. Surprisingly few takers, and for that I am immensely grateful, because this turned out to be my version of a "very expensive lunch"...
I offered the stamps for free. Then I added $2.00 to cover part of my postage cost. I sent a PayPal request but forgot my new account was in CA$ not US$, so after their fees I netted $1.63 and then had to put $2.95 in stamps on the package before mailing.
So, I hope there are some rare stamps in there somewhere and after they are sold to Mystic they'll remember your daft ol' buddy Dave.
Still, I have had the great fortune of working with another member who is a constant reminder that "it's only money", so you might as well have fun, and don't sweat someone else doing well for what is really a very low hit on my end.
Cheers, Dave.
"...Oddly, there were some (very few) complaints beforehand about the postage cost..."
Incredible! It sort of makes you laugh but at the same time despair of human nature!
it seems that people do not appreciate "free" ..let them work for it a bit ! I am 77 and don't understand why people nowadays pay someone to do a task they could do themselves?
While trolling on ebay i saw a 1918 cover from Guatemala with 3 of my favorite stamps the Waterlow 1902 scott 118. Someone in Canada was offering it for 99 cents buy it now plus shipping. I wondered if this guy knew it was probably a 30 dollar cover..the only thing was his picture was "blurry" i could make out they were scott 118 but thats about it. i won the cover and when it arrived there was not a touch of a postmark on the stamps! You can see a wavy postmark on the back and the New Orleans 1918 datestamp. I guess its worth what i paid for it and another lesson learned !
