I always keep my eye out for the next album find (full of stamps). But I am looking to buy at a reasonable price as well. I'm familiar, of course, with eBay, craigslist, NobleSpirit and the like, but I'm wondering what other people use. My ideal is to buy someone's old albums which have been sitting in an attic for 40 years. Any good clearing houses or resources for this sort of thing? Thanks!

re: Where do People Buy Old Stamp Albums

Dealers often have old albums lying around. Some will have stamps and others will be empty. Dealer auction box lots often contain albums and many other supplies, even including now and then Dennison hinge packets.

Be careful with older albums. If they smell musty, then most likely they have not been stored properly and the pages may have mold or mildew on them. No good. Also, older albums were not necessarily printed on acid free paper. Yellow or brown pages are no good either.

re: Where do People Buy Old Stamp Albums

Back in the early 1990s we would drive down to Dutch Country Auctions and buy box lots which might include 3 albums of stamps for $140 or so..i know once i spent $440 and it pretty much filled the trunk and the back of the car. By the end of the 90's things had changed..the dealers from Philly and Baltimore would always outbid a small collector like myself...they would spend like 7,000 at the auction and did not care if they bid double what i bid on a single lot. One them actually spoke with me..he said he took the cartons home..pulled what he wanted and then returned the rest for auction...about every 7 weeks. But i guess my point if there is any is that i could roll up my sleeves and go through dozens of LARGE cartons and see what we were bidding on...if i could remember the lot # !

re: Where do People Buy Old Stamp Albums

I am mainly collecting USA right now. I purchased a big lot that included a Scott Minuteman album that ended around 1973, just like the one I had as a kid. The contents were about the same as I had too. Commemoratives from late 1930s to date, mixed mint and used, to the end almost complete. I've kept the album together because it's fun to look through.

I do get a kick out of looking at the US albums for sale on eBay from the likes of Noble Spirit and a few other big dealers. The higher value stamps are noticibly missing, hinge or mount still in their spot. So they cherry pick and sell the remains to you and I.

I also find their auctions confusing on purpose, as they'll say "only bid on what you see" and never tell you how many covers are in the lot, or any description at all. For instance I'll see an album all mint, but there's no indication of the stamps being in mounts or hinged... and you cannot tell from their fuzzy photos so I pass on by! They will include 100 photos which makes the lot look larger than it is, if you closely examine and go through a few times, you'll notice that they are the same stamps or covers from different angles etc.

On the other hand, I did buy a collection of early 1900s New Jersey postcards. I bid low and was surprised when I won. And when I discovered the lot included about twice the number of cards I had estimated. Next time out I got a lot that was rather disappointing. It's really a crap shoot.

I really have to check out Dutch Country Auctions. They are only about a half hour up the road from me!
