The 1d was was the concessional rate for troops' letters. The 2d was used for (a) the letter rate within Australia and the British Empire; and (b) the postcard rate to foreign countries. The 3d was (a) the registration fee; (b) the airmail fee within Australia; (c) the letter rate to foreign countries; and (d) the commercial papers rate to the British Empire. And the 6d was (a) the parcel (Scale 1) rate; and (b) the forces' parcel rate.

Left - Right: Greyish Green, Bright Yellow Green, Green

Left - Right: Scarlet, Bright Scarlet

Left - Right: Blue, Bright Blue

The deep brown shade of the 6d has a slight aniline quality, and has a tendency towards ink stripping.

Thanks for posting these Rob. I didn't know about these color differences. Are they described in your catalog? If so which catalog are you using?

Regards ... Tim.

Hi Tim

The catalogue I use that shows the entire set of 9 is the ACSC of King George VI (Australian Commonwealth Specialists' Catalogue).

It is a difficult set to complete, the deep brown is scarce. I also noticed I have the 3d blues in the wrong order, the stamp on the right should be on the left and vice versa.

Regards
Rob

To my eyes, the scarlet and blue differences seem especially subtle.

On the right, the 3d blue behind the nurse and the nurse herself is much lighter than the stamp on the left.

Hopefully the special link I created will help define the different shades.

Click onto the first stamp to enlarge it and move between the first and second stamp by using the left and right arrows on your keypad or just use the arrows on both sides of the image, you will see the different shades of scarlet and blue.

The different shades of blue is very noticeable.

Rob
