Hi Dave,
The first stamp is from Manchukuo in 1944 celebrating friendship between Manchukuo and Japan. It was a Japanese puppet state so no surprise there!
These stamps come in two versions depending on whether the characters in the middle are Chinese or Japanese. This one has Chinese characters.
Hi Dave,
The other two stamps are from Republic of China/Taiwan.
I think the orange stamp is SG 202 / Scott #1108 from 1955. My only concern is that the surcharge should be green which I don't see in the scan. I guess it's a very dark green.
The last stamp is SG 224 / Scott #1130 from 1956.
Thanks for sharing Nigel. Once I knew where to look I recognized where about half a dozen more inscrutable Asian stamps came from (i.e. Manchukuo) and now I know what to look for.
Still have a few more puzzlers to post.
Not thinking this will be a collection area for me with the possible exception of occupations around WWI and WWII especially which I am finding intriguing from an historical and philatelic perspective.
#1 was in a separate glassine inside an envelope with no notations. #2 and #3 were in a glassine with a handful of similar orange stamps on close look being a couple variations of stamps and overprints.
Insights are, as always, greatly appreciated.
Cheers, Dave.
