Very interesting, I heard about stamps being used for advertising. I'll need to locate a few (if I'm lucky).
Some countries also added advertising to sheet margins, such as this 1928 cover from France:
Roy
Johannesburg International Philatelic Exhibition souvenir sheets. With added content.

Those are beautiful Eric.
VERY cool! Thanks for sharing those!
I just came across this little sheetlet from France with similar labels. Much more recent - advertising Bic pens.
These Germania stamps from Germany come from a booklet from 1910 and also have advertising printed on the tabs.
Sorting a box of US stamps I found this stamp.

A stamp dealer advertising approvals on back of stamp.
This will go into my Odds and Ends page.

Hi Doug,
I don't know if you saw Brechinite's recent post with a similar backstamp from the same London company:

There are various forms of the backstamp. This one reads:
ERRINGTON & MARTIN
STAMP IMPORTERS
SOUTH HACKNEY, N.E.

In conjunction with the "Highlighted Auction Area of the Week" - which this week includes New Zealand, I thought it would be fun to talk about an unusual aspect of New Zealand philately - the stamps issued with advertising printed on the backs of the stamps. the first of these appeared in 1893 on the back of the one penny (1d) Victorian Definitive of the time.
I could only find one not so great example in my own meager NZ collection, but I found a few pics on the web;
This image was from a Vance auction;
And here is a link to a great article written by members of the New Zealand Society of Great Britain that discusses the history behind the advertising;

The article is a great read - well worth the time. So folks - take a second look at your old New Zealand stamps - you might find a surprise on the backs!
