Germany.

250 "ERSTTAGSBLATT" (what is that?) covers and 500 cacheted FDCs; plus a bunch of "Leuchtturm" (good brand?) albums for covers.

All stamps from the 70s. (Sorry for small size).

I'll be going in blind but will probably find out a firm number when I do. All the details aren't there obviously but Gut-Instinct Answer to the Question: "What (low) US$ number do I praise my Higher Power for another stamp bonanza and what (high) US$ number do I get out faster than pepperoni at a Vegan Convention?

Thanks.

I would not expect much. Dealers put very little value in albums. Most of them have little interest in first day covers as well. Don't be surprised If you get offered as little as $100 or even less. It would be best to find a dealer who specializes in FDC's.

Thanks. To clarify...

Someone else owns this stuff and wants me to take a look/make an offer. I'm going in blind and want to just say yea/nay with no haggling or undue time expenditure. Affirmative possible only if it adds to The Hoard with another big bargain.

Canadian dollars, and here in my hometown so "free" pick up. Wants me to look/offer tonight but I'm trying to put it off until I see what people here think first. Given common response to FDCs I'm leaning towards extracting the stamps but keeping the postal cards intact.

Looking online at Germany/Berlin 70s-era stamps I'm thinking this will be fairly common stuff with little chance of a substantial positive surprise.

Thanks again.

re: A Question on an offer I received.

I haven't seen any contents. All I see are abunch of binders. The Lighthouse springbacks are one of my favorite albums, I actually put my 19th century U.S. Scott Platinum hingeless pages in A Lighthouse springback. They are for sure one of the nicest available BUT dealers will not give you much more than $5 a piece for them. They have to sell them and might get $15 but they do not like bulk items, just like the FDC's. Stamp dealers like to travel as light as possible. The rest of what I have heard does not sound very appetizing to me. You never know when going out to look at a collections. Most of these people have no idea whatsoever about stamps and most often inherited them. I use to advertise to buy collections in the K.C. paper and had more calls than I really expected. However, in most cases the seller makes it sound like a treasure when it is usually any thing but. Almost always the lot is not worth the time, whatever it is that you intend to do with. I'd offer a hundred bucks if there are not some items with substantial real world value in the lot. Often these types of collections have more invested into the supplies than they do the value of the contents. Supplies are good to have but ones you will never use will often sit in the rest of your stuff, forever...... The springbacks are very good in putting collections together because they take nearly any size album page.

Not apples to apples but these are the latest buy prices for US First Day covers from one of the larger dealers ......

COMMON UNADDRESSED 0.08

COMMON ADDRESSED 0.06

MIXED LOTS OF ABOVE 0.07

UN 0.03

The last large lot of First Day Covers I ended up with I wholesaled to a dealer for 6 cents apiece.

I have no idea if the German one's are worth more but doing a few searches on ebay and comparing US to German retail pricing will give you an idea.

re: A Question on an offer I received.

Those prices are pathetic but not surprising. Besides being basically worthless they take up space! You'd be lucky to ever sell much, unless like Webpaper wholesaled them out.
Personally I would not want the lot except for the Springbacks. Just my single stamp collection takes up a lot of space, I could not imagine collecting anything larger that is postal related. Most of those larger items are not worth the space they take up and very few people want them.
For just starting out I wouldn't go down that path unless you really like it.

I was not paying good attention to the light house binders. It appears that only the two on the left side are likely springbacks. The others look like they might be stockbooks. If so they're worth about the same.

A stamp removed from an FDC does not become a GPU (Genuinely Postally Used) stamp.

Folks who eschew CTOs, for example, are unlikely to welcome stamps ex-FDC.

If you want them in your collection, great!

But I would not extract them in the hope of adding value.

re: A Question on an offer I received.

One of our local gentleman has a collection of Canada which is in two boxes, on odd sheets and pages, folders etc that he insists he wants $4000 for because it "contains some small Queens". There is no inventory, nothing actually catalogued, so I suggested he either put it up in the local auctions or take it to a dealer in Winnipeg. After which I will give him 10% more than the dealers written offer.
Strangely he seems reluctant to take up the offer.

re: A Question on an offer I received.

Sheepshanks, $4,000 is a lot for a Canadian collection. It should have all but 15-20 stamps, unless there is much early mint and a good run of QV Jubilees. Saying there are some small QV's is not saying much of anything good and that there is probably not much better that would add up to $4,000. 20% of cat is the most I would expect for it and I'd doubt there is $20,000 of cat in it.

Mitch I quite agree, I have not actually looked at the stamps he has and thought I was being quite generous with my offer. I do pick up the occasional accumulation of Canadian/USA stamps at local auctions but have never paid more than 40/60 bucks. Quite often the Stockbook/Album are worth more than the stamps.
Here's one coming up in the summer that Illustrates the point.

Think the seller is a lone person but wish that the site rules (not Stamporama) made it obligatory for sellers to state names/ addresses/details. I shall not be making a bid on this lot.

Well it does not appear there are many stamps in it but just a nice hingeless album.
The value would depend on what someone would want to pay for such an album. $25-50 would be my guess including shipping.
