Are you sure that is 1995 and not 1996? The 6 in the 1996 looks a lot like a 5 unless you look at it with a 30X loupe. So, I'm pretty sure that's a Scott #2921 dated 1996.
Here is a comparison chart;
Sorry its not a little clearer, but it appears there isn't one with those serpentine die cuts and a small red 1995 date.
This might be a job for the new microscope mentioned elsewhere on this site!!
I saved the picture to my desktop and enlarged it. Looks like a 6 to me.
I downloaded it and then enlarged it too and it looks like a 1995 to me, flat top and gap in right place for a 5
I blew up the scan and drew the opposite conclusion especially after I looked at some other copies that I have. If the ink on the 9's are blurry, it can disguise the left side of the circular part of the 6. I'm still betting this is a 6 and not a 5.
Well I looked at it again and blew it up as far as I could, and now I'm not so sure! Dang! But without a better scan or the actual stamp in our hands it is all guess work.
Isn't this a hoot? Everyone sees a slightly different thing! Love it when folks post these mystery pics. We all get to flex our philatelic sleuth muscles. fun fun fun!!!
We appreciate all of your attentions and efforts. I believe you are all right in that perhaps I need a better scan I guess I'll play with it a bit and see if I can do better.
That DOES look like a 5! Hmmm interesting!
To me...this stamp and the mystery stamp do not look similar. I mean to say the 6 is clear as can be on this. Again I am not the collector just the one who makes the scans. Thanks for forcing me to do a better job. I believe I may be learning something.
Chris makes some good points with some excellent imagery to back it up.
Another good point not to be overlooked;
notice the "tail" on the suspect image versus the tail of the 5 on the 1995 image Chris provided - the 'tail' ending should stop abruptly before curving upward. It does NOT stop abruptly on the suspect stamp. the tails are completely different, strongly suggesting this is because its actually a 6 that wasn't completely inked properly/completely.
And again, they never printed this booklet stamp with both serpentine die cuts AND a red 1996 date.
I believe this mystery is solved - thanks Chris!
Well, If it were me I would send it off to be expertised. New varieties are always coming up.. Good Luck.........
At the cost of expertising, you might want to be reasonably sure first, that what you have warrants the cost.
Just my opinion, for what its worth
yeah, that makes sense, $20 or $30 dollar opinion over a $2.00 maximum value stamp!!!!!!
If cost concerns dictated the passion for discovery, I would think we would still be in the stone age.. I'm in for $10, let me know where to send it. Plus if this is a real 1995, others should show up. And I don't think it would be a $2 stamp. If it is, answers are worth small extravagance.. I've bet on many a slow horse and a few bad sports teams.. Just my two cents or $10 in this case...
You might want to invest in a usb magnifier, it should be able to help you see the numbers much clearer. There is a description of the magnifier in this thread. https://stamporama.com/discboard/disc_main.php?action=20&id=13811#104167
Vince
If I look at it with my specs on it looks like a 5 - with them off it looks like a shaky 6. I don't know if that proves anything other than my eyesight is pretty ropey !!
Malcolm
I'm feeling the whiplash, folks ... 5,6,5,6,5,6,5,6 ... but I think that Chris nailed it with the underinking argument.
"Got my new microscope today"
excellent, Chris....
expertising money saved!
Now to go to the NCAA....
Hi! Thanks in advance for any help. This stamp is identical to # 2921 in every way except one: the date 1995. I can find no reference in my Scott 2013 Specialized. Booklet stamp that is die cut.
