Without an image to look at, I'd guess you're talking about a precancel. Take a visit to the Precancel Stamp Society.
No not a precancel...I wish I could send an image but my scanner is on the fritz! Sorry
Looks like to me that there were no bar cancels except on precancels and perhaps a few early FDCs Am I correct?
No Canada bar cancels only USA...???
Sure you're not thinking of a "box cancel"? They are often confused as pre-cancels, but they are not.
OK I shall check out the box cancels and see what I can find There were Doane cancels used in the US and I wondered if they were used here in Canada....Thanks
Can you perhaps locate an image of just what it is that you are asking about on the internet somewhere and upload it here so we can see what it is you are trying to describe ?
Cheryl,
The basic problem people are having with your description is that "bar cancel" is not a generally recognized description in the field of cancels (at least not one I am familiar with), so it does not immediately bring to mind a specific pattern.
Doanes were not used in Canada, but a number of different patterns of duplex cancels have been used. The killer portion of these cancels might fit what your are describing as "bar cancels".
Here are some samples (all these have come out of my "sold" database from Buckacover.com, but there are many covers with similar cancels currently available):
Roy
Roy thankyou..
I am glad to hear you verify that Doane cancels were not used in Canada The
3rd envelope(Tillson) that you posted is cancelled in the manner of the one I was hoping to acquire It should arrive later this week....Without the envelope the cancel was difficult to distinguish from a roller cancel So this would be a type of Duplex cancel Thankyou Roy I appreciate all the help.
I have a nice collection of cancellations and have been attempting to arrange them in some type of order of issue. The website of Canada postmarks (Admiral Stamps of Canada) mentions Bar cancels but had the term Duplex been used I might have understood the term
Most of the samples that I have include both a type of duplex and split ring cancel together.
I believe that the Box Cancel mentioned occurs much later and is still in use in local Post Offices...
Cheryl
I have several examples of roller cancellations but I have a question
Does a bar cancel have a city name on the cancel in the midst of the bars?I`m thinking the bar cancels I found in an auction are not bar cancels......Any help will be appreciated
