Image Not FoundA few weeks ago there was a thread on "What means emprunt?" to which I provided some explanation. This brings me to the new thread where I would like to know if countries cancel their stamps with some kind of general interest ads. I know from first hand that France did, although I do not know if it still the case. I submit some French examples (in French of course). They are called:"flammes"Image Not FoundImage Not Found

re: Cancels with government ads

Hi Everyone;

@ lerivage;

Yes I have had many of those type of advertising cancels. In the early days of US airmail service the
post office created a Jenny bi-plane cancel, with the text "Air Mail it Saves Time". More recent
examples are the USPS ads to get people to collect stamps, and I've seen those on British cancels too.

Others I've seen on British stamps are; "Washington Apples", Nestle's Quality Street Candy", which
apparently Nestle has a British branch that makes fancy Christmas candies. I Also saw a surfer girl in
a bikini, however, I don't think the is much good surfing in England. Others in Britain were to promote
festivals and industrial trade shows.

Just stayin' warm....

@lerivage

Very nice items, especially the one with the eyes. "Preserve your eyes; clarify yourself more"? Loses something in translation maybe... The eyes remind me of the Andy Warhol comic book girl:

I have room for a few such slogan cancels in my date cancel collection. I'll have to "keep an eye out" for "flammes." Big Grin
