I am new to this discussion group. I recently purchased a small stock book from a European collector. As I was redistributing the stamps into my collection I came across this horizontal coil pair. It has single line watermarks and perf 12. If it was Franklin it would be a SC #385. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious. Any help is appreciated.

Wouldn't be a #385, if a Franklin, because the "1" would be spelled out.

What I can see is either a very nicely trimmed pair of #405, or a vertical pair of the imperf #408 that was perforated to look like a coil. Either way, fakes. If there is gum on the back that looks nice, probably was regummed as well. At least that's my thought.

Thank you Michael. Fake was my first impression as well, but I don't know why you would fake something of relatively low value. Kinda like making counterfeit one dollar bills.

Practice on the cheap stamps first.

Hi wloiii63;

Welcome to our discussion group, and congratulations on your new membership!

Hope you enjoy our huge knowledge base of members from all around the world.

Both you and Michael think this to be a fake. Is it because the perf holes are too neat and straight?
Or are there other red flags that it's a fake? I would be interested in what made you feel it was a
fake, and many others who are less knowledgeable would also benefit from your reasons.

Just sortin' it out....

Ken, the stamp wasn't issued as a perf 12 coil.

Michael is correct. That design, in coil format and single line watermark only came perforated 8.5 or 10.

Both 441 and 448 are both perf 10 .according to Michael We are to believe There are more fakes than real stamps that is just not correct.
