"Anyone else collecting NATO as a topical subject?"
yes, as an extension of my European Union collection I have Nato, the Nordic issues (which are really beautiful stamps!) and a variety of topics going with the Europa theme.
Here's one:
Jopie
Same here Jopie, and my Europa collection has really taken a life of its own.
I am looking for a source for the more recent Nato related stamps, issued worldwide. The Michel Europa catalog (I have the 2009) stops covering Nato after 1989. And while I run into Nato stamps occasionally, I am looking for a definitive source that lists all Nato related stamps issued since then.
rrr...
And in the absence of such a source, SOR could issue a research document on Nato stamps. I would gladly contribute my data, including scans of FDCs and stamps.
"... I am looking for a definitive source that lists all Nato related stamps issued since then ..."
Thanks Michael (ikeyPikey)
That will be a help, and I will see if I can get the ATA list at Wescon (this April in SF).
I have started a Index catalog listing all my NATO and Nato related stamps, which ultimately will have scans of the stamps, FDCs, as well as more complete info than here, in addition to a cross reference of the various catalog numbers.
If anyone cares to add to this, or make a correction please be my guest. This is all very preliminary, but it highlights what I am suggesting, ultimately as a SOR resource. Catalog numbers from SG and Y&T would be nice additions. The items I have listed are items from my collection where I have stamps and for the most part FDCs as well. What is missing, I don't have yet..but just remember this is a work in progress.
NATO was not a high priority here, but I add to my collection as I stumble on new items, rather than as a targeted endeavor.
Also, as I don't collect past 2000, you will find a lot of space to add a contribution!

Hello
So far I have a database (in French and in Filemaker) with 107 entries for NATO. These include almost all Y&T numbers and all pictures from various sources. For the pictures I do not have the IPR for most of them and I'll have to check the corresponding rights. If anyone is interested I can email this database, or just the excel extract, without the pictures. By the way, I also have all the Norden (Nordic common issues) with the same offer.
Michel
Greece and Turkey join NATO (London 22 October 1951)
Greece issued three "NATO 1949-1954" stamps, which does not quite fit the thread title, but who's counting?
... 1200 Drachma
... 2400 Drachma airmail rate
... 4000 Drachma airmail rate
I am a little chuffed to have this stamp Genuinely Postally Used, tied on a not-too-bruised cover by a legible postmark ... decently centered, lightly cancelled ... but I am torqued that the Greedy Dealer demanded a full fifty cents!
The postmark is 19540923 Piraeus Mission (lit), but someone who knows more about Piraeus or Greek Postmarks is gonna have to be the one to answer "What Mission?"

Hi ikeyPikey,
The word apostoli here means dispatch, as opposed to arrival (afixis).
A lot of the Greek main post offices have used separate postmarks like this for arrival / dispatch / parcels / money orders / registration etc.
Nigel, Greetings:
I would fire my GoTo Greek, but I suppose she will insist that it means "gone on a mission" or, better "emitted".
Thanks,
/s/ ikeyPikey
I was reminded of Guthrum's "The Great Terror" thread when I came across Hungary's celebratory 1999 "We've Joined NATO" stamp.
It occurred to me that there ought to be a fair number of stamps & covers marking the recent expansion of NATO, as well as, of course, the various NATO anniversary stamps issued by the original members from time-to-time.

re: We've Joined NATO !
By the way, I also have all the Norden (Nordic common issues) with the same offer.

re: We've Joined NATO !
The postmark is 19540923 Piraeus Mission (lit), but someone who knows more about Piraeus or Greek Postmarks is gonna have to be the one to answer "What Mission?"

re: We've Joined NATO !
Hi ikeyPikey,
The word apostoli here means dispatch, as opposed to arrival (afixis).
A lot of the Greek main post offices have used separate postmarks like this for arrival / dispatch / parcels / money orders / registration etc.
re: We've Joined NATO !
Nigel, Greetings:
I would fire my GoTo Greek, but I suppose she will insist that it means "gone on a mission" or, better "emitted".
Thanks,
