I don't see any Olympics stamps, either in the regular issues or the semi-postals.
Ted
thanks They must have not gone to print...Thankyou
7 essays were produced by Finland, but the stamps were never issued because the 1940 Olympics were cancelled. They were intended to be semipostals covering the following 3 denominations: 1¼m+50p, 2m+50p, 4m+1m.
There were no Olympics in 1940. They were canceled due to World War II. They were scheduled to be held in Tokyo.
Yes I have a printed copy of the essays that were produced but not issued...There is a cancel for the 1940 olympics and the USA produced cinderella type promotional stamps....I wondered if the Finland essays were mentioned in the Scott catalogue.....Thankyou for the help
That is correct, they are not mentioned in the Scott catalog because they were never actually prepared nor issued as stamps. They only got as far as essays.
Cheryl, could I trouble you to post a scan of the sheet? I've seen the uncancelled essay sheet, but never a cancelled one. Thank you!
The cancel is a separate cancel...not a cancelled sheet of essays. I am bidding on a 1940 olympic cancel on ebay.....I will see if I can transfer the link
I tried but I`m not computer savy enough to transfer the image...T typed in Finland 1940 olympic cancel and you should see what I am referring to...That is how I stumbled upon the envelopes
Cheryl
In 1940, Japan's war in Manchuria and North China made games in Tokyo difficult if not impossible so they were moved to Helsinki, during a pause after Poland was destroyed, called by some as the Sitzkreig. However once Germany swept through Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Belgium and defeated France, that idea was also suspended and factually cancelled.
Despite the march of events, the Olympic Committee had held out hope and continued plans, possibly or mendacious reasons until it was obvious that the Games could not be held. So I suppose the 1940 essay was a part of that forlorn hope.
I suspect Olympics for 1944 were not even considered,
The IOC organized a small sporting competition in Lausanne from June 17th to June 19th....but no Olympics....It my info is correct....
" ,,,, a small sporting competition in Lausanne ,,,,"
The IOC had planned the games of 1944 to be in London, but that proved impossible for what should be obvious reasons.
" .... The organization would hold a tiny ceremony in neutral Switzerland in the summer of 1944, reminding the world that the spirit of peaceful international athletic competition still flickered; but a warring world took little notice. The Olympics were cancelled for the duration of hostilities. ."

Dumb philatelic question coming - what are essays?
"Dumb philatelic question coming - what are essays?"
Exactly Roy. The essay is the proposed design and they become a "proof" when they are actually printed.
Here is an example I posted earlier; the Dollard design (essay) for the first Irish postal stamps and several printed proofs;
No such thing as a dumb philatelic question, Lisa!
Even those of us who know what an essay is now, had to ask your same question at one time or another. Whether we had to ask quietly in our thoughts, or openly toward another collector, we all had to learn what it was through your same question.
Never be afraid to ask questions. More often than not, there's another member who's asking the same question...
Yes I had to look for the answer as well Thankyou guys for all the info
The English word "essay" comes from the French "essayer" which means "to try."
In essence it is a trial design, usually submitted for selection or approval or in prose an article writes to try to explain a subject or o advance an opinion.
Can anyone who has a Finland scott catalogue please check and see if there are olympic stamps listed for the year 1940? If so what would the scott numbers be? I don`t have a Scott catalogue to check this out. Thankyou for your help
