Their winter is our summer, so they were probably frozen in all that time. So much for the mailman's creed, eh?
The first day cover you refer to was issued at different times depending on which antarctic base it came from. Macquarie Island Base was issued 23/11/71, Mawson Base was issued 27/12/71, Davis Base was issued 13/1/72 and Casey Base was issued 17/1/72.
This is from the SG Australian Catalogue
Looks like you might have to chase up some more covers.
Cheers, Stephen
The first day of issue for each base depends on when the supply ship reaches it. 13 Jan 1972 was the first day of issue for the Davis Base only. The issue was released in Australia and Macquarie Island on 23 Nov 1971.
The Stamp Bulletin advises when the supply ships arrive at each base for each new issue, for those who want to order a complete set.
According to my Scott catalog, this is Scott#L20 issue date of 6-23-1971. This cover was dated 1-13-1972. Please explain this discrepancy.
