An unusual thought, JC -
I like unusual
Always amazed me that Wizard only won 2 Academy Awards, while GWTW won all the rest....and to this day, I STILL can't stay awake thru all of GWTW....
(BTW: Wizard is my all-time favorite film )

(...wandering a bit off topic)
Almost forgot the rest of my wanderings;
And what a film year it was!
- WIZARD OF OZ
- GONE WITH THE WIND
- STAGECOACH
- MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON
- WUTHERING HEIGHTS
- GOODBYE MR. CHIPS
- ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS
- HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME
- BEAU GESTE
- OF MICE AND MEN
- DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK
- GUNGA DIN
....and many others worth mentioning but too long a list!
...oh - sorry; stamps!
Randy
Very cool precancel. We're/are precancels only used by businesses?
@Randy,
The wizard of oz is a fantastic movie. Ray Bolger (the scarecrow) signed my grandpa's cast when he was over seas on a uso tour. Grandpa said he was hilarious and was cracking all of the GIs up.
I'm with you, I thought gwtw was boring also. Of mice and men was good but have you seen the newer version with Gary Sanise and John Malchovich? It's phenomenal.
Buddy Epson (the tin man) almost died because of aluminum dust in the tin man costume
Guess I must live in some other world, the only film I have seen on the list above is Wizard of Oz, the Judy garland version.
Have not seen any of this years Oscar nominations and none of them appeal at all.
Best film ever for me was Lawrence of Arabia, which I saw at the Leicester Square Odeon when it was released.
Going back in my little box now.
Vic, you owe it to yourself to explore not only that list, but the many other films of that era. To me, the late thirties and most of the 1940s were the true golden age of Hollywood. Many of the films listed can be viewed on Youtube and many are available at little cost on other venues.
BobbyB,
You are exactly right!
Ernie,
Cool story - thanks!
Randy
Motion picture and film historians often rate 1939 as the greatest year in the history of Hollywood. It was the year of "The Wizard of OZ" and "Gone With The Wind". Maybe Judy Garland licked this 1939 pre-cancelled coil stamp
