An Irish sheetlet showing Shackletons journey by boat and on foot to South Georgia Island to rescue his men.
Shackleton is the Gentleman on the left on the 4d Ross Island stamp.
a cover with cachet of Shackleton and the Endurance
Thanks, Phil, for sharing these with us.
Shackleton is one of my heroes, and I've been trying to get together enough material to make up a topical collection.
Happy belated birthday wishes!
Do you feel any older? I thought by now I would feel older, wiser, smarter, etc.....I don't.....Sigh!

I do not feel any older yet..the mind is probably going ..I don't think Shackelton was any saint..but he said he would bring all his men back and he did !
In my opinion, the world's most fascinating story of, well, endurance: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing, available in print and as a Kindle book.
Bob, mine is a bit more beat than yours..they did not want to charge me for it at the yard sale !
i think this one is a close second as far as endurance..i never knew about Theodore Roosevelts exploration of an unknown branch of the Amazon river before..he was fortunate to survive !
i would wager they never ate penquin again !!
Following a visit to the Falkland Islands this past year, I read Shackleton's first hand account of his historic and heroic journey entitled "South! The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition". It is well worth the read. I think I paid 99c for a Nook Book version.
I can understand why he is one of your heroes, Marilyn.

The South Georgia Shackleton stamp shows a two masted schooner named "Quest" that was used on later expeditions after the ill-fated "Endurance" voyage shown on the cover of the book. Endurance was a three masted Barkentine. Both had steam engines to supplement wind power.
British adventurer and former army officer Henry Worsley died today attempting to complete Shackleton's trek. Sad story; he sounds like one tough hombre.
i remember picking up the book Endurance at a yard sale in Florida and wondering in our comfortable world how these men were able to endure the hardships without any warmth or very little food .
