Still fun. 2015 Red Knot 'plate' P111, of the Coastal Birds Postcard Stamp Series, FDoI 20150601, cds New York City 20151215, with one of those shpritzy cancels that I think ... oh, never mind, I'll spare you.
Cheers,

Ok !
CDS = Circular Date Stamp
That's the round postmark with city and state in it, along with the date
Phil B.:
I collect those, too! Lots of fun!
David
CDS = Circular Date Stamp though, frankly, I usually corrupt it to City Date Stamp (in my head).
Lord, Let them not corrupt me at this stage of the game !
Okay, the penny dropped.
Anglophile knows "what's a CDS".
He is questioning the application of that term to sphritzy linear text.
Good question.

Dave (conversation moved from another thread) here is a pic of a few of mine from the same era as the ones in that box.
Look for the little number at the bottom. These issues began with the 18c issues.
Thanks Theresa.
Also, just realized how much I miss Ikey Pikey.
Dave.
Aww I miss him too, sniff!
Dave, seriously it is worth your time to check for these. There are many that are worth hundreds and they are very popular. Many of the most valuable are from the 18 and 20c era - watch for transportation coils!
Thanks Theresa. There were 45,000 in the box. Took me an hour to look at 400 and I found none. May have to make this a project for my kids to pay me back the $100,000 (and counting) I’ve spent on their education…
Dave
Wow if you’ve gone through that many and haven’t found any chances are they are picked out. FYI They will only be on the coil issues - so you can skip everything else.
i think the highest interval is every 52nd stamp, with much lower
that said, some recent coil stamps I've yet to find a single PNC
Here are a few I just dug out of the heap, may help looking for them.
And here is a close up of the Yosemite one.
Mine are mint never hinged, some are line coils
This weekend I hope to upload my first Stamporama approval books and coincidentally one of them is on mint,never-hinged singles and strips of three and five plate number coils of the United States Transportation Coils. One of the stamps in that series is the 18¢ stamp showing an 1890s Surrey (Scott 1907) which was the first coil stamp issued by the United States Postal Service showing a tiny plate number on the bottom of the stamp. It was printed on the Cottrell Rotary Press by the engraved intaglio printing method. This press uses two plates joined together to make a sleeve creating a gap between the two plates that left a depression where ink could accumulate thus creating the joint lines seen on stamps printed on the Cottrell Press.
By the way the other approval book I hope to upload this weekend is on United States mint Christmas Seals.
Something else to look for are the colour numbers also printed on coils.
A close up of the 4th. stamp shows the numbers in the bottom margin.

Who brings back posts from 2015 ?
That would be me trying to use existing threads on a topic instead of creating yet another thread. Besides, your words are eternal golden treasures, Phil!

Theresa...Please stop with the Phil praises..... Its going right to his head !!!!!!
luckily there's still lots of space there...
Theresa, i don't think i am going to be eternal !
Ahhh but written words ARE eternal!
LoL you fellas crack me up!
Phil B. got me into Costa Rica.
I consider him a mentor.

I had to fly back up and see what newbie (ha ha!) revived a dead post!
I'm glad philatelia did actually. This is starting to pique my interest in another little side interest in stamp collecting. We get a LOT of junk mail in with coil stamps used instead of metered mail. I'm going to have to start checking them for PNCs now. I haven't been before because...well...I collect too much the way it is.
One more aspect won't hurt I guess.
Mike
Who digs up my ancient threads ?
I am glad they did. It was fun to read.
I miss Ikey Pikey's posts he was funny...i met him once or twice at big Manhattan or New Jersey shows.
In the 1980s many of us used to check the incoming mail for stamps with plate numbers. In fact i received one recently from a fellow Stamorama person..i had to soak it off..then i found two stockcards of PNC's in a U.S. stock book. On these 25 cent Yosemites the numbers will be hard to see from my scan..#2 one stamp #4 2 stamps #5 2 stamps #7 three stamps #8 one,#9 6 stamps,#10 2 stamps #11 2 stamps #13 2 stamps,#14 3 stamps.
