Regarding the "Ghost" K - this is fairly typical of an underinked die.
Yes, I do believe the Calais stamp is a precancel.
Regarding the 17cent stamp. This particular stamp was a workhorse for certain companies who had to send items by registered mail. While these precanceled stamps are not as ubiquitous as others they are by no means scarce.
I think the Calais, Maine, mark is a box cancel.
My primary reasons for thinking so is that at the top of the stamp you can just see the bottom part of the lettering "Maine" and a line underneath. It looks like a repeating design.
Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a local precancel and a box cancel. I still think it is a precancel, but I have been proven wrong before.
The angle of the cancel, and the font of the letters is what makes me think it is a box cancel. (Like you, I have been wrong before as well.)
This might help. A chart of the different pre-cancel types.

Thanks everyone!
Shortly after I started my stamp collection I bought a group... a HUGE group of precancels on ebay as I have mentioned in another thread. Here are some photos of some of them and I have a question about a couple of them for those of you who are "in the know" about these.
Thanks in advance,
Blair
on the two joined stamps. the "K" on the second stamp appears to be just an outline...
my questions are about the next two:
Is this a precancel? It appears to be Calias, Maine.
and is it unusual to see a precancel on a higher denomination stamp like this 17c?
