About 30 years ago, I was living in Lexington, Massachusetts. The local stamp dealer, at the time (long gone now) was Battle Green Stamps.

Bill, the proprietor of that shop was a great proponent of collecting the country of Bermuda. He could talk for hours about the joys of collecting that country. At one point he was so disenchanted with the lack of a "respectable" stamp album that specialized on Bermuda that he decided to publish his own.. That album, now in two volumes, is still available from the Bermuda Stamp Company in Hamilton, Bermuda - although North American orders are shipped out of Michigan.

Long story short, Bill got me collecting the stamps of Bermuda. He sold me one of his albums and I have been hooked ever since. Here's where I need some help. The original pages of that album - but not the supplements after 1984 - are beginning to yellow. I am thinking that perhaps Bill did not use acid free paper.

Has anyone else had the experience of having album pages discolor or yellow after 30 or so years? If those pages are not acid free, would I be best served to replace them with ones that are?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

David

What size are the album pages? If the company producing the album doesn't make the old pages, then probably all the older pages will be showing acid damage.

If the pages are standard size, and they aren't brittle and falling apart, you could probably go to an office supply store and have the pages photocopied onto acid-free paper.

Acid paper can be treated (buffered) as well, but I don't recall the specifics. (It's been a few years!) I think the Library of Congress website had info on this and they probably still do.

That's true, but there comes a point of no return when the paper degrades too much to be salvaged. Probably easier, and safer for the stamps, to just get new pages on acid free paper. Besides, to "fix" the paper, you have to take the stamps off the page anyway. Might as well remount them on new pages if going through all that trouble.

Just ran across this thread and in case anyone is interested in this album, it is still available:

http://www.bermudastampcompany.com/catalog.asp?catid=390&n=The-Bermuda-Album

Listing says the pages are on acid free stock.
