I just looked up the definition for "hoarder" -
I am definitely NOT that....
Randy
LOL, maybe in a good definition of the word?
Perhaps "History Worshiper" would fit better.
I think "hoarder" implies an unwillingness to share, and I've seldom seen any real stampers who are not willing to share their knowledge of history and cultures with anyone who asks a sincere question.
As proof I offer the archives of this and other related topics and the members who often spend hours searching for information to share about some of the most trivial details.
Sadly, I personally know two hoarders, and they're not of the same household. I see literally no comparison between what they have done and my collection. I am a very organized person. These hoarders could not find their collections if they had one.
I am a 'Everything in its place, and a place for everything.' kind of person. If there is not a place for something, then something must go. A hoarder on the other hand, will continue taking in items and continue piling things up to the ceiling.
Of the two people, one had plenty of spending money and used it to make their mountains. The other had very little money, and imagined a future need of everything. Sad. Downright sad.
Doe you have just met your opposite number...for some reason i feel compelled with being a volume buyer...i end up trading or selling only a portion ot the volume..therefore i end up being a hoarder. On the flip side i have thousands of covers and stamps that might help another !
We aren't hoarders, we are collectors! Our "hoards" are categorized, are kept in good condition and have value when redeemed. There are not piles of rotting food mixed in. That show really shows the worst of the worst. I was a realtor for many years and I saw a lot of wacky stuff, mainly at rental properties that the owner wanted out of badly. I never saw anything as bad as on "Hoarders" but when you see a bathtub full of garbage, it's safe to assume that nobody in that home bathes!
I don't know that it's necessary an all-or-nothing proposition. Part of my collection is very neat and organized, that being the portion of my revenue stamp collection that I have scanned for my website and added into my database. However, the material that's waiting to be processed, as well as the material for my non-primary collecting diversions most certainly would be at home on the next episode of "Philatelic Hoarders". Several rooms of disorganized shelves and box lots, albums, folders, stockbooks, collection remainders, etc. piled high.
Hey, I gotta have something to fill the days when I retire in 10-15 years...
They started to clean out the house across the street. A hoarder used to live there. I'm pretty sure that the recent influx of rats into my house coincides with the cleaning out of the house across the street.
I agree with USRevenues - its both, more often than not.
My main interests are neat and organized; my minor interests, not so much.
(....and that's okay! )

I have over 100 copies of several recent issues like the liberty bell forever stamp and the eagle presort stamps. There are so many varieties which I have to sort through. My wife thinks I am a hoarder. I remind her to be grateful since I don't collect women!
I don't consider myself a hoarder but I have to say that I have way to many stamps and I keep buying more. At the rate I am going in regard to printing out my albums and mounting stamps I probably could spend the next 5 years working on my collection without having to aquire any new material. I would say that someone like myself and probably most of us are actually accumulators, a much nicer term then hoarder, which t
Lends itself to images of holed up people not able to move in the homes because of all the clutter from their possessions. My stamps , even though they take up considerable space are neatly stored and don't pose a fire risk, LOL.
Accumulator Me, if you saw the house we have lived in for 49 years i guess you would say we qualify ! It certainly sounds nicer than hoarder.
No chance that I'm a hoarder. I throw lots of stuff out to make room for my collection!
sometimes we can't avoid it. went to the last Michael Rogers auction last July 18th.
bought a lot with 9 boxes of stuff. All the others said it was junk. There must be 50 lbs.
of on paper stamps (40 lbs of machins). I've spent 100's of hours close cutting them.
Yes, they may be a hoard right now. but hope to start listing some of them soon. BTW:
one little box in these nine boxes had approx. $5000.00 cv. of old Canada & GB that weren't on paper.
"Mixed Boxes are an addiction, and I am an addict."
I just saw something interesting. Stamp Collectors were being referred to as "history hoarders". Our little pieces of paper contain history (well many do). I just thought that an interesting observation.
