Interestingly they look like they all are VR, the official stamp version.

I have a vague memory of the 100th, mostly about getting fed constantly

and looking cute for family photos.

I was about six months old in May, 1940 so it is a little blurry.

re: Happy Birthday Penny Black!!!

A little late for the actual anniversary (just got these a couple of days ago) but I thought I'd post images of the miniature sheet and booklet. The Smiler generic sheet has sold out and it would seem that eBay sellers are doubling their money on it already:

Here's a close-up of the stamps:

The 2 pence blue and the Mulready envelope were also issued on the same day but the Penny Black gets all the attention.

re: Happy Birthday Penny Black!!!

Parkinlot,

That's very interesting. I did not realize that the two pence blue was issued on the same day.

Food for thought: I think all stamp collectors and even some small percentage of the general population know or have heard that the penny black was the world's first stamp BUT... this may be semantics on some level but is it technically accurate to call it THE first stamp? Could one call the 2 p blue "the world's first stamp"? Was the penny black available earlier in the day???

I learned something today. Thank you!

re: Happy Birthday Penny Black!!!

I don't have the reference book handy right now but I seem to recall these particulars.

The Penny Black was issued May 1, 1840 and it was officially released for use May 6. The earliest cover, I believe, was dated 1 May 1840.

The 2d Blue was also issued May 1, 1840 and it was officially released for use on May 8; however, the earliest cover has a 6 May 1840 date.

Rowland Hill designed the first adhesive postage stamp to be the penny black; the 2d blue was created practically simultaneously but based on the original 1d design.

So the Penny Black is the "older sibling" by a whisper.

re: Happy Birthday Penny Black!!!

You are correct Coco... According to the Scott Catalogue the 2p was valid for postage on May 7th not May 6th.
