Hello everyone,
I've been a member for a few days and been having a little look around and thought I'd better introduce myself. I am a 60 (ish) male from the UK and have only just recently started thinking about starting stamp collecting.
As a youngster I used to collect stamps but not very seriously and have been wondering about maybe starting with GB stamps.
The problem I've got is how to stop racing around the internet (there's SO much about stamps...) and actually apply my brain to the serious task of deciding what to collect.
Anyway, the first task has now been completed as I have 'signed' on here and introduced myself. I love your site and have been overwhelmed by just how much there is and how friendly the place is.
By the way, if anyone is wondering my avatar is of Trouper (my whippet)when he was a puppy. He is now 7 years old.
Bye for now.

Hi Tregeor,

Welcome! I sure can relate to racing around the internet. I likely spend 10x reading about stamp collecting as I do working on my collection! Happy

Hello Tregor and welcome aboard the S. S. SOR (Stamp Ship SOR, my nickname for it). You've done your research and pick a great site to join. Many great folks here, with plenty of stamp knowledge to share with the others.

Many thanks for the welcoming response everyone. It's a beautiful day here in Northumberland (5.15pm) so I'm going to take Troops out for his last walk of the day but I will definitely return to the site soon (i.e. tomorrow!).
'bye for now,

Hi Tregor! Coco dog (on my avatar) gives Trouper a friendly play bow too!

How exciting to embark on collecting! GB is a rich area, with lots of depth and detail if you chose that route, or satisfaction just dealing with the major issues and contemporary stamps. There are some tough areas, such as the dreaded Machin heads and all their varieties, and some of the more expensive stamps around, especially among the QV to KGV lots.

This is a welcoming place to share your discoveries and interests. Look forward to hearing what your stamp hunts bring you.

Cheers,
Peter

Tregeor--

A hearty welcome from a 50(ish) collector from Orlando, FL USA!

I echo what has been said already--GB is a WONDERFUL place to start! So much history and variety in GB stamps.

The key is to enjoy the hobby and ask questions--we are more than willing to help! BOB

Welcome Tregeor.

Nothing wrong with being 60ish. I joined that club a couple of months ago.

If you haven't noticed, there are many dog fanciers here. Sometimes I think that our pooches run SOR, well at least we do know that Coco runs Peter. Laughing

re: Hello from Northumbeland...

Hello again everyone,
Many, many thanks for the kind welcome. I'm still looking around the web and have a few ideas on where to start but thank you Inverkeilorjohn for the lovely offer of duplicates etc to get me off the ground.
Like many of you on this board I remember as a child starting with a 'stamps of the world' book and swapping duplicates with friends at school and buying the odd stamp magazine, and that (for me at least) was pretty much the extent of the knowledge available. I never was a member of a stamp club as I lived in a smallish village with nothing like that available. Now, with the click of a button I can ask questions of folk the other side of the world and trawl through site after site covering pretty much every aspect of philately.
At the moment I'm sorting through the few stamps I've already got and the bits and pieces of postal memorabilia too.
I'm sure I'll be posting again especially in asking for information!
Regards
Tregeor

Welcome to the club. Sounds normal to me. I spend more time reading and chatting stamps ..and bidding than I do mounting stamps !

re: Hello from Northumbeland...

Glad to hear that I'm not alone in seeming to spend a lot of time reading stamp discussion boards and browsing the web pages! However, I am definitely SOON to be starting my stamp hunting.
