Weeds in Your Collection #4 – Samoa
by Nelson Laviolette

In Nelson's fourth article in his series on classical forgeries of pre 1920, he examines the Samoa Express noted having a forgery rate estimated to be as high as 95%. Another fascinating look at this corner of philately with useful information for all.

Thanks to Nelson for his continued contributions to the site.

SAMOA: This is very informative.

I have had these 4 Samoa stamps for a long while, and never have been able to ascertain if they are real or counterfeit. I must admit that after reading this informative article by Nelson, I am still confused. Crying
Now I am thinking I should fire up my microscope. (and replace my scanner that always seems out of focus).

Can anyone give me a reading, and some help? What am I missing? I am just curious.
By the way, I do not collect Samoa, and would be willing to part with these at a friendly collector's consideration (email me). Note that the stamps have a bit of toning.

rrr...

Trying individual scans with sharpened images..the best by scanner will give me.

Thanks Nelson..I recognize now the Fournier Counterfeits.
Yes the #1 has a small dot under the M. But is the cancellation genuine? Cancelled are listed at such high prices relative to Mint. Also the two cut edges?
By the way, it is perforated 12.5.

Boy, they are tougher to ID than I had expected! Thanks for the lesson.
Anyone wants some Fournier counterfeits? (and a reprint genuine or not #1)?
