I agree with Bobby. It seems these people are unaware that Bobby and I read every single post on this board. Please follow the rules!!

Bobby and Lisa, we have to especially careful of subtle, almost subliminal self-promotion!(cocollectibles sells single stamps,) Those members should be called to task, (blocks and multiples), have their posts edited, (and lots more) and duly warned!!! (with reasonable shipping charges) Thank you for being vigilant!
Bobby,
Since we are two of the BIG, BAD moderators and we enjoy yelling at people...actually we live for it...I think we should now edit every single one of cocollectibles posts!!
I'm not being picky but I assume that we are only talking about the self advertising of stamps which we own. I erred recently when I suggested a member check an item on Ebay which was not mine and apologised when this was pointed out.
However if we take this to it's logical conclusion then the references to web pages of members in their postings will also fall foul of this rule.
I personally do not object to the latter and have clicked through on a number of them.
Again, I am not being rude or trying to be an awkward cuss, just presenting a point.

Maybe we should just delete Peter?

The rule is aimed at both self promotion and third party advertising. With third party advertising, the boundaries can be so unclear, there is often confusion among the moderators as to what constitutes advertising and what doesn't. Early in my moderator role, I assumed the promotion of "Bill Steiner's" pages to be a violation of the no advertising policy. Boy, did I get flak over that! It seems there is a double standard in many areas, and the moderators do not always know where the sacred cows are. Speaking for myself, I usually do not take action on posts with links to items for sale unless the items belong to the author of the post, or it is a blatant attempt to promote the sale for someone else. If the link, even though to an item for sale, is to provide an example or illustration for a prior post, I generally do not consider it an advertisement.

Thanks Bobby, I have also just read the note/rule and see that it specifically excludes low key web addresses in posts, so please ignore my previous comment. One day maybe my brain will work faster than my fingers.
I also appreciate that the Moderators have to walk a fine line, which is not always very distinct, and do it very well under the circumstances.
Keep up the good work, site is a pleasure.

PS. Don't delete Peter, maybe just hit him with CTRL, Alt,Del and make him a mod (or Rocker?)
If you delete Peter make sure you keep Coco!
Bobby, it is my understanding that the self-promotion rule does not apply when a member posts information about another member's offerings. By this I mean:
"Hey SOR members, take a look at my new auction listings from Timbuktu!" - UNACCEPTABLE
"Hey SOR member, take a look at Bobby's new auction listings from Timbuktu!" - ACCEPTABLE
Our auctioneer can clarify the appropriate selling rules for us, if necessary, I'm sure.
Michael, that is my understanding also. As long as it is used appropriately and confined to the Auction & Approvals Discussion topic, I see no problem with this exception to the rule. However, sooner or later someone is going to realize that this loophole is a good way to get word out, collude with another member, and use this exception as carte blanch to slide around the rule. At that point, moderators are just going to have to make judgment calls, and I do not want to have to do that.
I think the rule also is relaxed to help members find items that will help with their collections that are not normally offered on SOR, such as the Steiner pages, philatelic societies, expertization services, and harder to find stamps and supplies that people are looking for. I would not want to change that either.
I must apologize to all for the post Coco made with subliminal messages. She is such a rascal at times, so full of mischief as only herding dogs can be. I was shocked when she promoted my selling of stamps, blocks, and other items with reasonable shipping costs.
Peter it's ALWAYS the dog's fault!
I have noticed that with more and more frequency members are making comments which put others on notice that certain items may be or will be forthcoming on the auction board or in the approvals. This is pushing the boundaries of the NO ADVERTISING policy and I really wish those persons who are doing this (and you know who you are) would cease and desist. If you cannot control your need to promote (even by hint or innuendo), I am going to be forced to do something I truly hate, and begin to edit out such comments. Please, if you have made such comments, whether you knew or did not know it violated this policy, go back and edit your posts and remove them.
