In the 2009 Scott under Spanish Morocco - Tangier there is an info box that says various overprints exist on stamps of Spain. I'm guessing this is what I have here. Are there no Scott numbers for these? Are they common?

Hi thebiggnome,

Yes, this is one of the stamps listed in the first of the two boxes in Scott.

I don't know why Scott doesn't give these stamps a full listing, but it could be because they were issued by the post office in Tangiers controlled by the Spanish republican government around the end of the civil war period.

The basic stamp is Scott Spain #592.

This stamps have full listing in SG. This one is Spanish Post Offices in Tangier SG 92.

I have quite a few Spanish airmails overprinted "Tanger." I also have some overprinted French Morocco semi-postal airmails. Scott lists the French Morocco overprints, but not the Spanish airmails. Who knows why?

Scott sometimes adds stamps that it has ignored for years. Recently, it added semi-official airmails issued by Brazilian carriers in the 1920s and 30s.

re: "Tanger" overprint on stamps of Spain

Tangier is a city within the Empire of Morocco. The Tangier Free Zone in Morocco was created by an agreement signed by France, Spain and the United Kingdom in 1923. Much the same as when Berlin was divided up among the British, Americans, French and Russians after World War II. When France was invaded by Germany in 1940, Spain took advantage of the situation and occupied the French portion of the Zone as well. The status of this international zone remained until Morocco gained its independence in 1956 and reintegrated the Tangier Free Zone at that time.
