A lovely idea! I have scratched my head wondering where to post these. And, a freebies topic makes the group appear fun and generous and may encourage more gifting. Personally, I'd rather gift a group of cheapies than sell for a dollar in the auction. It is much more satisfying to give them away gratis, don't you think? Gives me warm fuzzies and we all could use a few more of those heart warming moments. I especially enjoy sending an envelope of common material to a specialist to flyspeck, or to a young collector or beginner who treasures each new stamp. One man or woman's dupes becomes another's treasure hunt. Win / win all the way!!
Thanks for the suggestion, Michael!
you got my vote. as long as you do it in 7 days (just kidding)
You have my vote.
As someone relatively new to this fascinating hobby and with more holes than stamps, I love this very generous idea. Anyone with unwanted Canadian dupes can certainly send some my way. My duplicate supply is pretty small, but I would be happy to share those as well.
I too think it is a splendid idea (instead of just saying "great" all the time!).
Cheers,
Peter
We already have a good place for "Freebie" listing, under the title "General Philatelic - General Discussion". All one has to do is add "Free stuff, or give away".
Mike
Depending on how one looks at it, is both a good idea and not totally necessary (as per Capestampman's post).
Many members will know that other forums have places for Giveaways, contests and competitions and these would give the board a very positive outlook. However, these categories, positive though they are, are not the most used sections of other forums.
A long time ago I asked for a Cinderella category in the worldwide section and I was asked to use the current Cinderella category in the USA section. It seemed odd to me but the posts are read no matter where they lie so that's where they went.
This is NOT another call for a Cinderella category nor any other category that may be useful to the board (and there are those too), but just to put it alongside the OP's suggestion in terms of importance or necessity.
Like I said, it depends on how one looks at it.

IMHO, the greatest need on our DB is a category entitled "Inane Chatter" where moderators could move much of the unnecessary, off topic and, at times, silly banter which we all (myself included) occasionally are compelled to contribute.
I have some wonderful news for you! A bunch of us Stamporama ladies have decided to conduct our "inane chatter" off site. Isn't that great?
Theresa,
No, it isn't. One of the beauties of Stamporama is the way conversations flow from serious, specialized, knowledge to total drivel. Long may it continue (Sorry Bobby). Ladies (and gents) please keep the inane alive and public. Life is too short to be serious all the time.
Merv
According to the thesaurus on my computer, other words with meanings similar to inane include silly, foolish, stupid, fatuous, idiotic, ridiculous, ludicrous, absurd, senseless, asinine, frivolous, vapid; childish, puerile, dumb, moronic, ditzy, daft.
I've seen a bit of silliness on the Stamporama DB, and have even contributed some myself, like this post! But I have never seen a post that is foolish, stupid, fatuous, idiotic, ridiculous, ludicrous, absurd, senseless, asinine, frivolous, vapid; childish, puerile, dumb, moronic, ditzy, daft!
While comments that veer far away from the intent of the original post should probably be moved elsewhere, especially if they are responding to other off-target posts, I'd be sad to see Stamporama descend into nothing but "serious" posts and responses.
Bob

Oh my goodness! No one mentioned any misogynistic behavior on anyone's part! We simply thought that we needed a place to talk about cross-stitch, redecorating, shopping, mani-pedis, dogs and so on that was more appropriate than here on Stamporama. Us gals just sometimes like to chitchat among ourselves, just us girls. We're such a tiny minority here after all, and we really enjoy talking with each other. I honestly thought that it would make the mods happy because we would be following the numerous suggestions made to move those topics someplace else. We love Stamporama, but there are topics that really just don't "fit" in this forum. And - we don't want to bore you fellas to tears!
Sooooooooo no worries! The sky isn't falling! As a matter of fact, since we started the ladies chat room I've noticed an INCREASE in the gals participation here! I think it has made a few of the more reticent ladies feel more comfortable with online posting. We're getting to know each other much better and it has enriched our enjoyment of the home site. I think of Stamporama as our "home" and the chatroom is a breakfast nook for a coffee klatch.
It's all good, fellas!
It *IS* awesome. We get the best of both and as Theresa mentioned we are seeing an influx of female input on the main SOR board.
We chit chat about things the fellas really would have no interest in and we are getting to know some of those "hidden" members that feel they have nothing philatelic to contribute to the main board.
No need to feel offended fellas - we love you guys and this is home but sometimes ladies just need a place for ladies. This way we have ladies coming together from around the world who share a common base in stamp collecting but we are able to just sit around in a virtual "sewing circle" (which is an age-old reference to women gatherings that does not necessarily mean sewing - many "sewing circles" were for ladies literary discussions in times when they were excluded by men from the traditional gatherings).
It's really a great thing. I've been here at SOR since almost the beginning and since we started the ladies group I've "met" so many other ladies who have been long time members here but did not post on the db.
I guess you could say we get the best of both worlds

Many offer free items to members. Could we please get a new topic called "FREEBIES"?
There really isn't any place to put these, and they show up all over the place.
