Software like EZPerf, Perfomaster have limitations. Electronic $600 devices - not reliable. Using a CadCam program - $$$$. Measuring a stamp with a ruler or micrometer can be difficult & patience testing especially when you get into fractions of a mm.
My area of primary interest is forgeries so measuring overprints, frame sizes etc. is important.
One tool I appreciate is an on screen caliper from Iconico
Caveat:
1. You need a scanner but unlike the perf software, DPIs (more accurately PPIs) are not important, so you can scan at any resolution.
2. This is NOT a stamp tool. It is made for mesuring blueprints and other technical drawings where you have a reference point.
3. You need a reference or scale - easily done
The calipers are free (the paid version allows some unimportant features for our use).
To use the tool
1. Scan the stamp at any resolution with a reference - I use a printed ruler.
2. Calibrate the calipers (it measures pixels, so you can enlarge the picture to any size.)
3. Measure to accuracy of .01mm or greater
The calibration is simple but not well explained.
Results:
Measuring Perfs - the perf software at 600DPI/PPI gave me a result of 9.7 top & 9.6 bottom (Scott 444 perf 10). The calipers showed 10.1
