This is the info from ebay. I can not get the image to copy
Here is the image from that sold eBay item.
Booth does not list this re-engraved issue. Sorry.
This FDC appears to me to have been prepared by the dealer shown on the address label: CURTIS RAWSON LTD. This perhaps was one of a small edition.
As for value, normally one might say the price it sold on eBay gives its market value. However, I think this one may have slipped under the radar. If collectors were under the impression that these were not officially issued, they wouldn't be looking for them.
So the buyer of this particular one may have got a bargain; £2.26 (CA$ 4). The face value alone is £11.50 (CA$ 21) and added to the cost of the cover, would have made this quite an expensive buy when issued.
I realise that GB FDC's have lost a lot of value because of the high volume produced and the general loss of interest. However, this may have more value than normal because of the low numbers 'serviced'.
Unfortunately, the dealer who prepared this (based in Nottingham) seems to operate from a multi dealer outlet NOTTINGHAM STAMP CENTRE and has no presence on the internet. I found an ADPS advert which confirms this; not even an email address.
If you are determined to obtain one, it is possible this dealer may still have some in stock. It will mean writing to him though. Alternatively, put a watch on 1997 GB castles on eBay.
Thankyou guys for your help. My friend purchased it and wondered if I were interested. I wanted to pay him accordingly...Any suggestions on value ? I know that the Benham cancels can fetch a fair amount
To give you an idea of value, Booth's "Collect GB First Day Cover" (29th Ed) book lists the original 1992 castle first day cover with a value of 12 pounds for any postmark on an illustrated cover. The value is for an unaddressed cover in excellent condition.
There is currently an eBay listing for four Benham silk illustrated covers, each franked with a different singleton of the 'set'. This is priced at £13.25 (CA$24); Buy-It-Now.
That I would say is a good starting point. It depends how generous you want to be to a friend. I would say CA$10 at the most.
Thank you. for all the info..I am pleased to see that it is worth something. This is the first personally made castle FDC that I have seen so I wasn`t sure
I know this is straying from the topic a little but as you seem to have a liking for the GB Castles issues, perhaps you might care to see this miniature sheet from 2005. It reproduces the original Wilding Castles but with new values.
Although I do not collect GB, I do buy the odd M/S that I consider to be in the classic mould. Royal Mail have been producing numerous miniature sheets lately that really rise above the bland designs of the usual bin fodder commemoratives:
Hi,
I believe this is a Royal Mail envelope that was used for FDCs for a number of high value issues.
The wording at the bottom left is "Royal Mail First Day Cover".
The sticky address label would have been used to give collectors the option of removing it to have an unaddressed FDC or keep the small discrete address label.
I don't know if the label was prepared by the recipient or by the Post Office. You see a lot of different labels used like this.
However, I'd guess the labels were applied by the Post Office Philatelic Bureau on a order from the recipient for a number of these covers.
Yes Nigel, I think you're right on all counts. The dealer who used to supply me with more specialised covers used the same technique.
However, there seems to be a dearth of this particular cover. This 1997 re-drawn issue on any cover seems somewhat thin on the ground. There's nothing at all on Delcampe at the moment.
Incidentally, today I spotted a presentation pack of this issue, priced at a very healthy £55.
What is the value of a Benham 1997 FDC of the high value castles ? ( all stamps on one cover)
My friend has a 1997 Great Britain FDC with all 4 high value castle stamps. It has the same postmark as the Benham FDC . This is not a Benham FDC. Royal Mail did not issue a FDC with all castle stamps but the Royal crest is in the left lower corner. He believes it to be a collector`s FDC . Can you tell me if there is any value to such a FDC?
