re: Proprietary - New York

Private die proprietary stamps from the John F. Henry Medicinal Company. They are listed in the Scott US Specialized Catalog. The 1 cent is Scott #RS114, and the 4 cent is Scott #RS116. These types of stamps are usually found faulty, so such condition doesn't affect the catalog value for stamps with minor faults. You will have to determine what the paper type is for each stamp as the values vary greatly in that regard.

Private die proprietary stamps were printed and used by private companies, as permitted by the law, to pay federal taxes to support the Civil War.

re: Proprietary - New York

The American Civil War saw all sorts of new ways to "tax" federal citizens, including a huge array of revenue stamps found on Carte de visites, playing cards, booze, etc., and the first federal income tax, all implemented under the first Republican president. will ironies never cease.
